Chapter 6 - The Rose Garden Standoff

The drive back to the Moretti estate was a blur of speed and deafening silence. Luca sat in the back of the armored SUV, staring out the rain-streaked window, his grip white-knuckled around the broken silver crucifix.

I sat across from him, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs. I had just traded a quiet life as a maid for the front seat of a mafia war, all because I couldn't abandon an old woman who loved her garden.

When we burst through the wrought-iron gates of the estate, the scene was chillingly quiet.

Too quiet.

The two guards who were supposed to be stationed at the front doors were gone.

"Guns out," Luca ordered his men, his voice deadly calm.

The SUV screeched to a halt in front of the grand steps. Luca was out the door before the vehicle even fully stopped, a sleek black pistol drawn from his shoulder holster. I followed closely behind his guards, terrified but refusing to wait in the car.

We entered the mansion. The grand foyer was empty. The crystal chandelier cast long, eerie shadows across the marble floors.

"Daniel!" Luca called out.

Silence.

"Sweep the house," Luca commanded his men. "Check the kitchen. Check my mother's room."

I stayed close to Luca as he moved methodically through the first floor. The kitchen was empty. The vase with the yellow rose was still sitting untouched on the island.

Then, we noticed the conservatory doors.

They were wide open. The rain was blowing inside, soaking the expensive rugs Vanessa had picked out for the engagement party.

Luca didn't hesitate. He stepped through the glass doors and out onto the wet patio, his gun raised. I followed him, the cold rain instantly soaking through my thin jacket.

At the far end of the garden, near the old pear tree and the weathered wooden bench, stood Vanessa.

She was holding a small, silver revolver, pointing it directly at the chest of the man kneeling in the mud before her.

It was Daniel, the house manager. His hands were tied behind his back, a trickle of blood running down his temple.

And standing right behind Vanessa, held firmly by one of Marco Bellini's thugs, was Teresa.

The older woman looked terrified, her silver hair plastered to her face by the rain. But when she saw Luca, she didn't cry out for help.

"Go back inside, Luca!" Teresa yelled, her voice remarkably strong. "It's a trap!"

"Shut up, old woman," Vanessa hissed, pressing the gun harder against Daniel's head.

Luca stopped ten feet away, lowering his weapon just an inch, but keeping it locked on Vanessa. The two guards flanked him, their weapons drawn on the thug holding Teresa.

"It's over, Vanessa," Luca said, his voice carrying clearly over the sound of the rain. "I have the microfilm. I know your father killed Tessa. I know about the extortion."

Vanessa laughed, a high, desperate sound. The polished socialite was completely gone, replaced by a cornered, dangerous animal.

"You think the Commission cares about something my father did forty years ago?" Vanessa yelled. "They care about strength, Luca! And you've gotten weak. You're letting a maid and a senile old woman dictate how you run this family!"

"Let my mother go," Luca commanded, his voice vibrating with lethal intent.

"She's not your mother!" Vanessa screamed, her eyes wild. "She's a concubine your father used as an incubator! She’s nothing!"

Luca didn't flinch. He didn't rise to the bait.

He slowly reached into his coat pocket and pulled out the thick parchment birth certificate.

"I know," Luca said softly.

Teresa gasped. The sound was small, broken, and filled with decades of agonizing grief. She slumped slightly in the thug's grip.

"I know she is my biological mother," Luca continued, never breaking eye contact with Vanessa. "I know my father forced her to give me up. I know she stayed in this house, swallowing her pride, hiding her pain, just so she could watch me grow up."

Luca took a slow, deliberate step forward in the mud.

"And knowing all of that, Vanessa, makes me realize exactly what she means to me," Luca said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "She isn't just my mother. She is the strongest person I have ever known. And if you pull that trigger, I will end the Bellini bloodline tonight. Starting with you, and ending with your father."

The raw, terrifying promise in his words made the thug holding Teresa hesitate. He looked at Vanessa, suddenly unsure if the payout was worth a war with Luca Moretti.

Vanessa’s hand trembled. She looked at Luca, then at the guards flanking him, and finally at me, standing in the rain behind them.

"You ruined everything," Vanessa snarled at me. "Over a stupid flower."

"It was never about the flower," Teresa spoke up quietly.

Everyone looked at her.

Teresa stood a little taller, despite the thug’s grip on her arm. She looked past Vanessa, directly at Luca.

"I never cared about the yellow roses, Luca," Teresa said, her voice carrying a profound, devastating truth. "I hated them. They were a monument to the woman who took my son."

Luca’s breath hitched.

"Then why did you save one?" he asked, his voice cracking. "Why did you cry over the trellis?"

Teresa smiled, a sad, beautiful smile that defied the rain and the guns pointed at her.

"Because your father planted them the day you were born," Teresa said softly. "They were the only thing in this entire world that marked the day I became your mother. I didn't get to hold you that day. I didn't get to feed you. All I got... was a garden."

A heavy, absolute silence fell over the yard. The truth of her sacrifice hung in the air, more powerful than any weapon drawn.

Luca’s eyes filled with tears, blending with the rain on his face. He raised his gun, perfectly steady, aiming directly between Vanessa’s eyes.

"Drop the gun, Vanessa," Luca ordered, his voice devoid of mercy. "Or I drop you."

Vanessa stared down the barrel of his pistol. She saw the absolute certainty of her own death in his eyes.

Slowly, her hand shook. The silver revolver slipped from her fingers, landing softly in the mud next to a crushed yellow rose petal.

The thug holding Teresa immediately let go, raising his hands in surrender.

Luca’s guards surged forward, tackling the thug to the ground and zip-tying Vanessa’s hands behind her back.

Luca didn't watch them. He dropped his gun into the mud and walked straight to Teresa.

He wrapped his arms around the older woman, burying his face in her wet silver hair, holding her tighter than he ever had before.

Teresa sobbed, finally burying thirty-six years of hidden grief in her son's embrace.

"I'm sorry, Mom," Luca whispered fiercely. "I'm so sorry."

"I'm here, sweetheart," she cried, holding him back. "I'm right here."

I stood in the rain, watching them, tears streaming down my own face.

The immediate danger was over.

But as Daniel was helped to his feet, he looked toward the service gate at the back of the garden.

"Mr. Moretti," Daniel gasped, clutching his bleeding head.

We all turned.

Standing just inside the open service gate, flanked by a dozen heavily armed men, was Marco Bellini. Vanessa's father.

And he was holding a lighter over a heavy, gasoline-soaked wooden crate.

"You think it's over, Luca?" Marco yelled, his voice rough and hateful. "My daughter might be weak, but I'm not. The Commission sent me to clean up my own mess."

May you like

He looked down at the crate.

"Starting with the explosive your father hid under this garden thirty years ago."
