Chapter 8 - THE BRACELET ON THE MISTRESS'S WRIST

The blinding headlights of the SUVs pinned us in the narrow Brooklyn alleyway.
I stood frozen, the heavy wool coat Luca had given me feeling suddenly suffocating. David stepped slightly in front of me, instinctively shielding me from the armed men, though he had no idea what was happening.
“Who are you?” David demanded, his voice steady despite the terrifying situation. “What do you want?”
Sabrina laughed, walking slowly toward us. Her white trench coat gleamed under the harsh lights.
“I’m the woman who is about to become very, very rich,” Sabrina smiled. “And you, David, are my winning lottery ticket.”
She gestured to her men.
“Take him. If the wife fights, shoot her.”
Two massive mercenaries moved forward, raising their weapons.
“Wait!” I shouted, holding up my hands.
Sabrina stopped, arching a perfectly sculpted eyebrow. “Begging won't save you, Margaret. You’ve outlived your usefulness.”
“I’m not begging,” I said, my voice trembling but loud enough for everyone to hear. “I want to make a deal.”
Sabrina scoffed. “You have nothing I want.”
“I have the silver key,” I said.
The alley went dead silent.
Sabrina’s smirk vanished instantly. Her eyes narrowed into predatory slits.
“Charles told you about the safe deposit box,” Sabrina realized, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.
“Yes,” I lied smoothly. “And I know you need the original transfer documents to finalize the takeover of Whitmore Properties. You have the forged contract, but without the original deeds in that box, the board of directors will tie you up in litigation for a decade. The Russians won't wait a decade for their money, Sabrina.”
Sabrina stared at me, calculating my words. She knew I was right.
Answer one: Sabrina needed David to leverage the Chicago mafia, but she desperately needed the silver key to secure the real estate empire she had spent years infiltrating.
Open two: If I gave her the key, would she let us go? Or was I just handing her the final piece of the puzzle before she killed us?
“Give me the key,” Sabrina demanded, holding out her hand.
“Let David walk away right now,” I countered, standing my ground. “Let him walk to the end of the block. When he’s safe, I’ll give you the key.”
David looked at me, completely bewildered. “Mrs. Whitmore, I don't even know what’s going on. I’m not leaving you here with them.”
“David, please,” I pleaded quietly. “Just do what I say.”
Sabrina laughed. It was a cold, humorless sound.
“You really think you’re in a position to negotiate, Margaret?” Sabrina sneered. “I’ll just kill you both and take the key off your corpse.”
She nodded to the mercenary on her left. “Shoot her.”
The man raised his gun, aiming directly at my chest.
I squeezed my eyes shut, waiting for the impact.
Suddenly, a loud, rhythmic thwack-thwack-thwack echoed from the sky above us.
The sound of helicopter blades.
Before the mercenary could pull the trigger, a blinding spotlight from above cut through the darkness of the alley, illuminating the entire scene in stark white light.
A voice boomed over a heavy loudspeaker from the sky.
“DROP YOUR WEAPONS! YOU ARE SURROUNDED!”
Sabrina looked up, panicking. “Shoot them! Shoot them now!”
But it was too late.
The roar of powerful engines echoed from both ends of the street. Three black, armored SUVs smashed into the alley, ramming Sabrina’s vehicles out of the way with terrifying force.
Dozens of heavily armed men poured out of the SUVs, their weapons trained directly on Sabrina’s mercenaries.
And stepping out of the lead vehicle, looking like a god of war in a tailored suit, was Luca Moretti.
“Nobody moves,” Luca commanded, his voice echoing off the brick walls.
Sabrina’s men, realizing they were vastly outgunned and outmaneuvered, immediately dropped their weapons and raised their hands.
Sabrina stood frozen in the center of the alley, her face completely pale. The arrogant mastermind had finally been cornered.
Luca walked slowly toward her. He didn't look at the mercenaries. He only looked at the woman who had tried to steal his cousin and destroy the Whitmore family.
“Sabrina Vale,” Luca said softly, stopping a few feet away from her. “You have caused a considerable amount of trouble tonight.”
Sabrina tried to mask her fear with bravado. She lifted her chin, glaring at the mafia boss.
“You can't touch me, Moretti,” Sabrina spat. “I’m protected. The Bratva won't let you start a war over a real estate developer and his bastard son.”
Luca tilted his head, studying her face.
“The Bratva doesn't protect failures, Sabrina,” Luca said calmly. “When they find out you lost the company and the heir in one night, they won't send an army to save you. They’ll send a cleaner to erase you.”
Sabrina swallowed hard, realizing he was absolutely right.
“But I’m not here to kill you,” Luca continued.
He reached out and grabbed Sabrina’s left wrist.
Sabrina gasped, trying to pull away, but Luca’s grip was iron.
He pushed up the sleeve of her pristine white trench coat.
Resting against her pale skin was a heavy, distinctive diamond bracelet.
Luca stared at the bracelet. His dark eyes widened in absolute shock.
I frowned, stepping closer. “What is it, Luca?”
Luca didn't look at me. He kept his eyes locked on the diamond bracelet adorning the mistress’s wrist.
“Where did you get this?” Luca asked, his voice suddenly thick with an emotion I couldn't place. Fear? Betrayal?
“Charles gave it to me!” Sabrina shrieked, trying to wrench her arm free. “It was a gift!”
“Don't lie to me!” Luca roared, the sudden explosion of anger making everyone in the alley jump. “Charles Whitmore didn't give you this bracelet. This is a custom piece. Only three were ever made.”
Luca glared at Sabrina with terrifying intensity.
“One belongs to my mother. One belongs to my sister.”
Luca pointed at the bracelet on Sabrina’s wrist.
“And the third belonged to my aunt Sofia. The woman who disappeared thirty years ago.”
My blood turned to ice.
Sofia Moretti. David’s mother. The woman who died in a car crash a year after David was born.
Answer one: Sabrina hadn't just seduced Charles for a corporate takeover. She had a personal, tangible connection to the Moretti family’s darkest secret.
Open two: If Sofia Moretti died twenty-seven years ago... how did Sabrina Vale get her diamond bracelet?
“Who gave you that bracelet, Sabrina?” Luca demanded, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper.
Sabrina stared at Luca, her terrified eyes darting toward David, who was watching the scene in complete confusion.
Then, Sabrina laughed. It was a broken, hysterical sound.
“Charles didn't tell you the whole truth, did he, Margaret?” Sabrina sneered, looking at me.
She turned back to Luca, a sick, victorious smile spreading across her face.
“Sofia Moretti didn't just have one child when she fled Chicago thirty years ago.”
Sabrina looked at David, then at Luca.

“She had twins.”
