Chapter 5 - THE TAPE RECORDER

Peter crumpled to the marble floor with a howl of pain, clutching his shattered knee.
Answer one: Eleanor wasn't just a fragile widow. She was a mother who had finally realized the monster she had raised, and she was willing to break him to protect Hannah's legacy.
“Don't you ever touch her again,” Eleanor sneered, standing over her son with her cane raised.
I stumbled backward, clutching the micro-cassette recorder to my chest. My wrist throbbed where Peter had gripped it, but I didn't care.
Four hundred guests were in absolute uproar. People were shouting, pointing, and recording the scene on their smartphones.
“David,” I called out over the noise. “Connect this to the sound system. Now.”
David didn't hesitate. He grabbed the small silver recorder from my hands and sprinted toward the DJ booth at the corner of the ballroom.
“Grace, please!” Peter begged from the floor, his arrogant facade completely destroyed. “If you play that, you destroy the foundation! You destroy everything we built!”
“You destroyed it eight years ago, Peter,” I said coldly.
I looked at Camille. The mistress was huddled near the terrace doors, trapped by security. She was desperately trying to wipe a hard drive on her laptop.
“Take her laptop,” I ordered the guards. They snatched the device from Camille’s hands, ignoring her protests.
The ballroom speakers crackled with static.
The room fell deathly silent.
Then, a voice echoed through the massive space.
It was a voice I hadn't heard in eight years. A voice that still haunted my dreams.
“Dad, stop tearing my room apart. You’re scaring me.”
Hannah’s voice. She sounded weak, out of breath.
Tears instantly flooded my eyes. I covered my mouth with my hands, my knees trembling.
Then, Peter’s voice boomed through the speakers. Angry. Vicious.
“Where is the black ledger, Hannah? I know you took it from my study! If your mother sees it, she’ll ruin everything!”
“Mom is trying to help sick kids, Dad,” Hannah coughed violently on the tape. “And you’re stealing their money. I saw the accounts. You’re routing the donations to a shell company.”
“I built that charity!” Peter screamed on the recording, the sound of drawers being ripped open echoing in the background. “It’s my money! Give me the book, or I swear to God, I’ll transfer you to a state hospital tomorrow!”
The guests gasped in horror.
“Dad... my chest hurts,” Hannah gasped, the terrifying beep of her heart monitor accelerating rapidly. “Please... hit the call button. I need a doctor.”
“Tell me where the book is first!” Peter demanded mercilessly.
“I... gave it to Grandma,” Hannah wheezed, her breathing turning shallow and ragged. “Dad... please...”
The tape captured the sound of heavy footsteps walking away.
“You ungrateful little brat,” Peter spat on the recording.
Then, the sound of the hospital door slamming shut.
Followed by the continuous, high-pitched, flatline tone of a failing heart monitor.
The tape clicked off.
The silence in the ballroom was heavier than lead.
Open two: We had the confession. We had the proof of his neglect. But where was the money he had stolen? And how could I clear my name from the forged documents?
I looked down at the man writhing on the floor.
He hadn't just been greedy. He had let our daughter die alone because he was furious she had outsmarted him.
“You left her to die,” I whispered, the absolute devastation hollowing out my soul.
“It was a panic attack!” Peter sobbed, clutching his knee. “I thought she was faking it to get me to leave! I didn't know her heart was stopping!”
Reversal: Peter’s defense wasn't denial; it was cowardice. He had convinced himself his daughter was manipulating him, using it to justify his own monstrous actions.
Before I could speak, the heavy wooden doors of the ballroom burst open.
Five uniformed police officers stormed into the room, followed by two plainclothes detectives.
Camille instantly raised her hands.
“Officers!” Camille shouted, pointing directly at me. “Arrest Grace Callahan! She has been embezzling millions from this foundation! I have the USB drive to prove it!”
The lead detective walked straight past Camille.
He walked up to the stage, looked down at Peter on the floor, and pulled out a pair of steel handcuffs.
“Peter Callahan,” the detective said, his voice echoing in the quiet room. “You are under arrest for fraud, grand larceny, and the reckless endangerment resulting in the death of Hannah Callahan.”
Camille’s jaw dropped. “What are you doing? She’s the one on the accounts!”
The detective turned to Camille and smiled thinly.
“We know, Miss Price,” the detective said. “Because the FBI has been tracking those accounts for three weeks. Thanks to a tip from a very cooperative informant.”
The detective stepped aside.
Walking into the ballroom, holding a thick manila folder, was a woman I had never seen before.

She looked exactly like Camille.
