Chapter 6 - The Broken Rosary
The drawing crumpled in my fist as I drove across town. I didn't go to Linda's house. I went to Aunt Beverly's.
Beverly was Linda's older sister. She was the gentle one, the woman who always sat quietly knitting in the corner of family gatherings, fingering an old wooden rosary. If anyone knew the truth about Linda's obsession with Tyler and the twisted dynamics of this family, it was Beverly.
I knocked on her modest townhouse door. She opened it, looking frail but unsurprised.
"I saw Daniel's car speed past earlier," Beverly said softly, stepping aside to let me in. "I figured you'd come eventually."
"He was here?"
"He came asking for money." Beverly walked to the kitchen and poured two cups of tea. Her hands shook slightly. "I told him no. I won't fund his gambling anymore. Not after what it's done to you."
"Gambling," I breathed, the missing puzzle piece finally snapping into place. The debts. The desperation. The boarding pass.
Beverly sat across from me and placed her wooden rosary on the table. "Linda enabled him for years. Whenever he got in too deep, she bailed him out. But in exchange, she demanded control. She always wanted a do-over child. When Tyler was born, Linda decided he was going to be hers."
"And Jennifer?" I asked, my voice hard. "Is she part of this too?"
Beverly sighed heavily. "Jennifer isn't blood-related to us, Sarah. She was adopted into the family late. And she's always been desperately in love with Daniel. Linda promised Jennifer that if she helped get you out of the picture, Linda would pay off Daniel's debts and let them be a family. With Tyler."
The sheer malice of it took my breath away. "What about Chloe? Why did she hit Chloe?"
"Because Chloe looks exactly like you," Beverly said sadly. "And Chloe speaks her mind. Linda can't control her. She wanted to break Chloe to break you."
Beverly reached across the table and touched my hand. "You have to fight her, Sarah. But be careful. Linda has a safe in her study. Inside it is a document that proves exactly what she’s been doing with Daniel’s debts for years. If you get that, you destroy her custody case."

I stood up. "How do you know what's in the safe?"
Beverly pulled a small, silver key from the center of her rosary and slid it across the table. "Because I’m the one who locked it."
