Chapter 3 - The Gold Money Clip

Luca stared at the gold money clip resting in his palm.
The blood on the sharp metal edge caught the light from the hallway. It was fresh. Bright crimson.
Someone had cut themselves prying open the secret compartment.
And that someone had dropped a money clip belonging to the boss of the rival mafia family.
Luca slowly closed his fist around the gold.
He turned to his brother.
“Michael. Go downstairs. Sit at the table. Do not speak a word to anyone.”
Michael didn't argue. He scrambled down the stairs, his face ash-white, practically collapsing into an empty chair next to a stunned elderly aunt.
Luca walked out of the master bedroom.
He didn't run. He didn't shout.
But the terrifying, deadly calm radiating from him made the entire dining room shrink back in fear.
I stood near the kitchen doors, my heart hammering against my ribs. I had only ever seen the polite, quiet side of Luca Moretti. The man who drank black coffee and spoke softly to his mother.
Now, I was seeing the man who ruled an empire.
Luca descended the staircase and walked directly toward Vanessa.
She took a step backward, her high heels clicking frantically on the marble.
“Luca, darling,” she began, her voice pitching high and breathless. “Whatever Michael told you, he’s lying. You know he’s a compulsive liar. He’s just trying to cover his own tracks.”
Luca stopped two feet in front of her.
“Hold out your hands, Vanessa.”
She froze.
“What?”
“Hold out your hands.”
“I will do no such thing,” she snapped, attempting to regain her arrogant composure. “I am your fiancée. You will not humiliate me in front of my family and yours.”
Luca didn't argue.
He reached out, grabbed her left wrist, and pulled her arm forward.
Vanessa gasped in pain.
There, slicing across the palm of her hand, was a deep, fresh gash.
It was bleeding through the hastily applied makeup she had used to conceal it.
The room erupted in shocked gasps.
Teresa covered her mouth, leaning heavily on her cane.
“You broke into my father’s room,” Luca said, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper. “You used your father’s money clip to force the compartment open when your nails weren't enough. You cut your hand. And when you heard Bruno coming, you panicked and dropped the clip.”
Vanessa’s chest heaved. Her eyes darted wildly around the room, looking for an exit. Marco and three armed guards blocked the front doors.
“Where is the brass box?” Luca demanded.
“I don't know what you’re talking about!” she screamed, trying to yank her arm away. “You’re crazy! Let me go!”
“Marco,” Luca said, not breaking eye contact with her. “Take her purse.”
Vanessa shrieked as the massive security chief stepped forward and snatched the designer clutch from the dining table.
She lunged for it, but Luca pulled her back effortlessly.
Marco opened the clutch.
He reached inside and pulled out a heavy, tarnished brass box.
It was small, no larger than a deck of cards, but covered in intricate, old-world engravings.
Teresa let out a heartbreaking sob.
“My husband’s box,” she cried, tears spilling down her wrinkled cheeks. “She took it. She took his final words.”
Marco handed the box to Luca.
Luca let go of Vanessa’s wrist. She stumbled backward, clutching her bleeding hand against her red silk gown, her chest rising and falling in pure panic.
“Open it,” Vanessa hissed, her facade completely shattering, leaving only a cornered, vicious predator. “Go ahead, Luca. Open it. See what your saint of a father left behind. See the truth about the man you worship.”
Luca looked at the small brass latch.
His thumb brushed over the metal.
The dining room was so quiet I could hear the rain beginning to beat against the tall glass windows.
With a soft click, Luca opened the lid.
There was no money inside. No deeds. No lists of enemies.
There was only a tarnished silver locket.
And a small, folded piece of white paper.
Luca picked up the paper. He unfolded it slowly.
His eyes scanned the few words written in his father’s messy, familiar handwriting.
I watched the color drain completely from Luca’s face. I watched the strength leave his broad shoulders. I watched a man’s entire reality fracture in real time.
“What does it say, sweetheart?” Teresa whispered, stepping closer to her son.
Luca couldn't speak.
He just handed the paper to his mother.

Teresa adjusted her reading glasses. Her hands shook violently as she read the words aloud to the silent room.
“The Bellini family did not order the ambush that will take my life. The traitor sleeps in my own house. Her name is Vanessa.”
