Chapter 11 - THE SECRET IN THE BLOODLINE

The silence in the study was absolute.

Luca stared at the DNA results, his eyes scanning the impossible words over and over again.

Probability of maternity: 99.9%.

Mother: Vanessa Bellini.

Father: Unknown.

“Vanessa is Mia’s mother,” I whispered, trying to make sense of the shattered reality in front of us. “But… how? Evelyn said Clara was Mia’s mother!”

Luca slowly shook his head, running a hand through his dark hair.

“Evelyn hid Clara when she was young,” Luca said, his voice raspy. “Clara couldn't have children. My father told me once, years ago, that Clara had a medical condition. That’s why she never married.”

He picked up the photograph of Clara and Vanessa.

“Vanessa was a wild teenager,” Luca continued, piecing the puzzle together. “Bellini’s only daughter. She got pregnant. Bellini was a strict, ruthless man. An illegitimate child would have ruined his reputation in the Commission.”

I looked at the picture. Clara and Vanessa looked so happy.

“Clara and Vanessa were friends,” I realized.

“Yes,” Luca said. “Before the war got ugly. Clara must have offered to take the baby. To raise Mia in secret so Vanessa wouldn't be disowned.”

It all made a terrifying, tragic sense.

Clara took the baby to protect Vanessa. She raised Mia for four years in upstate New York, loving her as her own.

“But then Vanessa changed her mind,” Luca said, his voice hardening with anger. “Ten years ago. Vanessa showed up at Evelyn’s house. She didn't come to threaten Clara. She came to take her daughter back.”

I thought of what Evelyn had said last night.

Clara left that night. She packed one bag to protect this family.

Clara hadn't run away from the Bellinis. She had run away with Mia, to protect the little girl from being raised by a monster like Vanessa.

Clara had fled to Chicago, begged her father for help, and left Mia at the orphanage before Vanessa and Marco could catch them.

“Bellini didn't know,” I said, looking at the manila envelope. “He just found out today. That’s why he didn't bail Vanessa out. He realized his own daughter ordered Marco to hunt down his granddaughter.”

Luca leaned back in his chair, staring at the ceiling.

“Vanessa orchestrated my father’s murder, infiltrated my house, and agreed to marry me… all to get close enough to find the daughter Clara stole from her.”

The sheer magnitude of the betrayal was staggering.

Suddenly, the study doors opened.

Mia stood in the doorway, a confused look on her face. She was holding a plate with a warm piece of peach cobbler.

“Uncle Luca?” Mia asked softly. “Are you okay?”

Luca sat up straight, instantly sweeping the DNA papers and the photograph into his top drawer. He didn't want her to know. Not yet. She had just found a family; she didn't need to know her biological mother was a murderer sitting in federal prison.

“I’m fine, sweetie,” Luca smiled, standing up and walking around the desk.

Mia walked over and handed him the plate.

“Grandma said you needed to eat.”

Luca took the plate, looking down at the sweet, warm dessert his mother had made.

“Thank you, Mia.”

She smiled, looking up at him with big, brown eyes. Eyes that belonged to the Bellini bloodline, but held the gentle, kind soul of the Moretti woman who had raised her.

“Can we go to the garden later?” Mia asked. “Dominic said there are horses in the back stables.”

“We can go right now,” Luca said.

He set the plate down and offered her his hand.

Mia took it happily, and the two of them walked out of the study.

I watched them go, a profound warmth filling my chest.

Blood didn't make a family. Love did. Protection did. Clara had proven that, and now Luca was proving it again.

I turned back to the desk to clean up the envelope Don Bellini had given me.

As I picked it up to throw it in the trash, I noticed there was one more piece of paper stuck inside the thick manila folder.

I pulled it out.

It was a short, handwritten letter. But it wasn't from Don Bellini.

It was from Vanessa.

Written on federal prison stationery, dated from this morning.

Hannah,

My father told me he was bringing you the truth today. He thinks it will make Luca show me mercy.

It won't. I know I’m going to die in here.

But before I do, I want you to know one last thing.

You think you won. You think you’re going to play house with Luca and my daughter.

But you should ask your precious mother why she was the only nurse on duty in the trauma wing the day Luca’s father died.

I froze.

Marco didn't force her out of the room, Hannah.

May you like

Marco paid her to leave.

The paper slipped from my trembling fingers, fluttering to the floor.
