Chapter 12 - THE FINAL GIFT

The kitchen went perfectly still.
Answer one: The package was from Montreal. The city Elena had fled to, the place where she had spent her final, peaceful years.
Luca gently stepped away from me, his face serious but calm. He took the small, brown-paper package from Daniel.
"Thank you, Daniel," Luca said.
Sophie, sensing the shift in the room, put down the sprinkles. "What is it, Daddy?"
"I don't know yet, sweetie," Luca said. He looked at me, a silent question in his eyes. Are we okay?
I nodded, stepping forward and placing a reassuring hand on his arm. We had no secrets anymore.
Luca opened the package.
Inside was a small, beautifully bound leather journal. Tucked into the front cover was a handwritten letter.
Luca unfolded the letter. His eyes scanned the neat, elegant handwriting. A soft, bittersweet smile touched his lips.
He handed the letter to me.
Dear Luca, the letter read.
If you are receiving this, it means my time has finally come, and the lawyers have executed my final requests. I want you to know that I found peace in my final years, thanks to Arthur. But I also want you to know that I never hated you. I hated the life. I hope, wherever you are, you have found a way out of the darkness. I kept a journal of Sophie's first three years—the happy memories before the shadows took over. Please give it to her. And Luca... please be happy.
Always, Elena.
Tears pricked my eyes. It was absolute closure. A blessing from the past, allowing us to fully step into the future.
Luca picked up the leather journal and knelt down in front of Sophie.
"Sophie," Luca said softly, his voice thick with emotion. "This is from your mommy. She wrote down all her favorite memories of you when you were a baby."
Sophie's eyes went wide with wonder. She took the journal gently, tracing the leather cover.
"Can we read it tonight?" Sophie asked, looking up at us.
"We can read it every night," I promised, kneeling beside Luca and wrapping my arm around Sophie's shoulders.
Luca looked at me, the profound love and peace in his eyes shining brighter than any diamond.
The mafia boss who had once ruled Chicago with an iron fist was gone. In his place was a devoted father and a loving partner.
That evening, the three of us sat on the large, comfortable sofa in the living room. The fireplace crackled warmly, casting a golden glow over the room.
Sophie sat between us, the journal open on her lap, listening intently as Luca read the stories of her early childhood out loud.
I leaned my head against Luca's shoulder, feeling the solid, steady beat of his heart. I touched the gold pocket watch resting on the side table, my father's legacy of love and sacrifice.
We had walked through the fire, faced down syndicates, and uncovered decades of lies.
But as I looked at my new family, safe and happy in the warmth of our home, I knew it had all been worth it.
