Chapter 12 - THE TIES THAT BIND

Six months later.
The Connecticut countryside was painted in vibrant shades of orange and gold. The air was crisp, smelling of fallen leaves and woodsmoke.
The Ricci estate had been rebuilt. It wasn't a dark, foreboding mansion anymore. It was a home. Wide windows let in the sunlight. The heavy, oppressive chandeliers had been replaced with warm, modern lighting.
I stood in the garden, watching Oliver chase a golden retriever puppy across the lawn.
He was laughing. A loud, joyful sound that echoed across the grounds.
"He's getting faster," a voice said behind me.
I turned. Isabella was walking toward me, carrying Sofia in a sling against her chest. She looked radiant, the shadows of the past completely erased from her face.
"He's unstoppable," I smiled.
Isabella stood beside me, watching her son.
"We got the final paperwork today," Isabella said quietly.
I looked at her. "For Carlo?"
"No," Isabella smiled. "Carlo pleaded guilty to avoid the death penalty. He'll die in a cell. The paperwork was for you."
She handed me a thick manila envelope.
I opened it. Inside were legal documents, signed by a judge.
It wasn't a work contract.
It was a legal guardianship agreement.
"Matteo and I want you to be the official godmother to the twins," Isabella said, her eyes shining with tears. "And to Oliver. We want it in writing. If anything ever happens to us... they go to you."
My breath hitched.
"Isabella, I..." I couldn't finish the sentence. The emotion lodged in my throat.
"You aren't an employee, Emma. You haven't been for a long time," Isabella said softly, squeezing my hand. "You are our family."
Matteo walked out of the house, carrying Mia in his arms. He wore a simple sweater, looking more like a tired, happy father than a former mafia boss.
He handed Mia to me.
The baby cooed, wrapping her tiny hand around my finger.
Matteo stood beside Isabella, wrapping an arm around his wife's waist. He looked at me, then at the children, then out at the sprawling, peaceful estate.
"We survived the fire," Matteo said quietly.
"And we built something better from the ashes," I replied.
Oliver ran over, his face flushed with exertion. He hugged my legs, then looked up at me with his bright, innocent eyes.
"Emma?" Oliver asked.
"Yes, sweetie?"
"Can we have ice cream for dinner?"
Matteo laughed, a deep, genuine sound. "Only if your godmother says it's okay."
Oliver looked at me, his eyes wide with hope.
I smiled, holding Mia close, feeling the weight of the silver bracelet on my wrist and the warmth of the sun on my face.

"Yes," I said. "Ice cream for dinner."
And for the first time in my life, I knew I was exactly where I belonged.
