Chapter 5 - The Night Manager

The silence that followed was suffocating.

I took a slow step backward, my heart hammering against my ribs. Jenna instinctively moved behind her father.

Marcus didn't flinch. He didn't reach for his weapon. The tall, heavily built head of security simply stared at Michael, his face completely devoid of emotion.

"You were the night manager," Michael repeated, his voice rising in panic. "You found me in my room. You told the police I was too drunk to be interviewed!"

"I told them what they needed to hear to protect the family reputation," Marcus said calmly, his deep voice echoing in the empty dining room.

"Protect the family?" Michael yelled, pointing at the photograph on the floor. "You were standing in the hallway taking pictures while my father was murdered! You knocked me out and poured bourbon on me!"

Marcus finally moved. He slowly reached inside his tailored suit jacket.

Michael tensed, preparing to protect his daughter.

But Marcus didn't pull a gun. He pulled out a small, encrypted flash drive and tossed it onto the table. It landed next to the black envelope with a sharp clatter.

"I didn't take the photo, Michael," Marcus said quietly. "And I didn't knock you out."

He pointed to the flash drive. "That is the original security footage from the hidden camera your father installed in the hallway smoke detector. A camera only he and I knew about."

Michael stared at the drive. "Then who took the picture?"

"Vanessa," Marcus said.

Jenna frowned. "But Vanessa is in the picture. How could she take it?"

"She didn't," Marcus corrected. "The woman in that photograph isn't Vanessa Bellini. It’s her older sister, Claudia."

The room spun. I remembered serving Claudia Bellini earlier that evening. She looked remarkably similar to Vanessa—same dark hair, same sharp features—but she was quieter, staying in the background while Vanessa commanded the room.

"Claudia went into the study that night," Marcus explained, his voice grim. "She demanded the warehouse deeds. When your father refused, she triggered his heart attack by crushing his nitroglycerin pills under her shoe. She left him to die."

"But Jenna said she heard Vanessa's voice!" Michael argued.

"Claudia was imitating her," Marcus said. "It was a setup. The Bellini family wanted your father dead, but they also wanted to ensure Luca would be distracted. They sent Vanessa to seduce Luca a week later, playing the grieving family friend. If anyone ever investigated the murder, the evidence would point to Vanessa, not Claudia. And Dominic Bellini would sacrifice his youngest daughter to keep his empire intact."

I felt sick. Dominic Bellini was willing to let Vanessa take the fall for a murder she didn't commit, just to control the Moretti family.

"Then who knocked me out?" Michael demanded.

Marcus looked at him, genuine pity in his eyes. "You don't want to know, Mike."

"Tell me!" Michael roared.

"It was Luca," a new voice echoed from the doorway.

We all spun around.

Standing in the entrance of the private dining room, looking entirely exhausted, was Luca Moretti.

His dark overcoat was wet with rain, and his knuckles were bruised and bloody. He walked slowly into the room, his eyes fixed entirely on his older brother.

"Luca?" Michael whispered, stepping back. "What are you talking about?"

Luca stopped in front of the table. He didn't look at the photograph. He didn't look at the flash drive. He just looked at Michael with profound, crushing regret.

"I came home early that night," Luca said softly. "I walked into the house just in time to see Claudia run down the stairs. I went to the study, and I found you kneeling over Dad's body, holding the gold money clip."

Luca swallowed hard, his eyes filling with tears.

"You were sobbing, Mike. You kept saying you were sorry. You smelled like bourbon. I thought... I thought you had asked him for money again, and the argument caused the heart attack."

Michael stared at his brother, horrified. "You thought I killed him?"

"I thought it was an accident," Luca pleaded, taking a step closer. "But I knew if the police found you there, holding the Bellini money clip, they would charge you with manslaughter. So I hit you. I dragged you to your bed. And I poured the liquor on you to make it look like a binge."

"You framed me for a relapse to save me from a murder charge," Michael breathed, the sheer weight of the misunderstanding crushing him.

"Yes," Luca whispered. "And I've hated myself every day since."

Michael didn't yell. He didn't swing at his brother. He just collapsed into the chair, burying his face in his hands, weeping for the tragedy of errors that had destroyed their family.

Luca knelt beside him, placing a hand on his back. "I'm so sorry, Mike. I was so angry with you for drinking again, I didn't stop to listen."

For a long moment, the only sound in the room was Michael’s quiet sobbing.

Then, Luca stood up. He wiped his face, his expression hardening back into the ruthless, terrifying mask of the Mafia Don.

He looked at Marcus. "Did Dominic Bellini admit to the blackmail?"

"No," Marcus said. "But he left the photo."

Luca reached into his pocket and pulled out a heavy, velvet box. He tossed it onto the table next to the flash drive.

The box sprang open.

Inside wasn't a ring. It was a massive, bloody diamond necklace. The same necklace Claudia Bellini had been wearing at the engagement dinner.

"Claudia isn't going to be a problem anymore," Luca said coldly.

He turned to me. "Natalie. I need you to do something very dangerous."
