Chapter 6 - THE BROKEN WINDOW IN THE PENTHOUSE

The deafening roar of automatic gunfire filled the penthouse, shattering crystal lamps and tearing through the expensive upholstery.
I lay pressed against the plush carpet behind the heavy leather sofa, my arms wrapped tightly around Brenda, who was sobbing hysterically. Dust and glass rained down on us like a violent hailstorm.
Above the chaos, Alessandro’s semi-automatic fired in sharp, controlled bursts.
“Marco! The hallway!” Alessandro roared over the gunfire.
Marco, crouched beside us, pulled a heavy tactical shotgun from beneath his suit jacket. He didn't hesitate. He popped up from behind the sofa and unleashed a devastating blast toward the shattered doorway.
A heavy thud echoed from the corridor as one of the attackers hit the floor. The incoming fire paused for a fraction of a second.
“Move!” Alessandro yelled, grabbing my arm and hauling me to my feet. “To the panic room! Now!”
He didn't wait for me to process the command. He practically dragged me across the ruined living room toward the hallway leading to the bedrooms. Marco grabbed Brenda, dragging the terrified nurse right behind us.
“Caleb!” I screamed, my voice tearing through my throat. My brother was asleep in the guest room.
“I’ve got him!” Alessandro promised, kicking the guest room door open.
Caleb was already awake, sitting up in bed, his eyes wide with absolute terror as the sounds of the gunfight echoed through the suite.
“Get down on the floor, Caleb!” Alessandro commanded, keeping his body between my brother and the doorway.
Caleb scrambled out of bed, dropping to the carpet. Alessandro grabbed him by the collar of his t-shirt and hauled him into the master bedroom at the end of the hall.
The master suite was massive, but Alessandro ignored the bed and the sprawling bathroom. He ran directly to the walk-in closet, shoving a row of expensive suits aside to reveal a solid steel panel seamlessly integrated into the wall.
He pressed his thumb against a biometric scanner hidden in the wood trim.
A heavy, metallic clack resonated through the room, and the steel panel slid open, revealing a small, reinforced concrete bunker illuminated by dim emergency lights.
“Get in!” Alessandro ordered, shoving me, Caleb, and Brenda inside.
The panic room was cramped, smelling of stale air and cold metal, but it was impenetrable.
“What about you?” I cried, grabbing Alessandro’s arm before he could pull away.
“I’m holding the door,” Alessandro said, his dark eyes burning with a fierce, uncompromising fire. He looked at me, a sudden, desperate intensity in his gaze. “If they breach the suite, Marco will lock this vault. Do not open it for anyone but me. Understand?”
I didn't want to let him go. I wanted to drag him inside with us and lock out the world. But I saw the absolute certainty in his eyes—he was not a man who hid while his home was attacked.
“Come back,” I whispered, my voice breaking.
Alessandro leaned in, his lips brushing against my forehead in a swift, burning kiss. “I always come back.”
He pulled away, stepping out of the closet. Marco slammed the heavy steel panel shut behind him, the locking mechanism engaging with a deafening thud that sealed us in absolute silence.
The contrast was jarring. One second, the world was exploding in violence; the next, we were trapped in a silent, concrete box.
Caleb was shaking violently, sitting on the floor with his knees pulled to his chest. I dropped down beside him, wrapping my arms around him, holding him as tightly as I could.
“It’s going to be okay, buddy,” I whispered, though my own heart was hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs. “Alessandro is going to stop them.”
Brenda sat in the corner, clutching her rosary beads, weeping silently into her hands.
Minutes stretched into agonizing hours. We had no way of knowing what was happening outside the steel door. The silence was more terrifying than the gunfire.
Suddenly, a heavy, rhythmic pounding echoed against the steel panel.
Bang. Bang. Bang.
I froze, tightening my grip on Caleb.
“Jessica,” Alessandro’s muffled voice called out through the thick steel. “It’s clear. Open the door.”
I scrambled to my feet, pressing the emergency release button on the inside control panel. The heavy door hissed and slid open.
Alessandro stood in the closet, his white t-shirt covered in plaster dust, a smear of blood across his cheekbone. He looked exhausted, but the lethal tension in his posture had eased slightly.
“Are you hurt?” I gasped, rushing forward to check his face.
“I’m fine,” Alessandro assured me, catching my hands gently. “It’s just a graze. The attackers are dead or captured.”
He looked past me to Caleb and Brenda, confirming they were unharmed, before turning his attention back to me.
“Who were they?” I asked, my voice trembling as the adrenaline crash hit me.
“Mercenaries,” Alessandro said grimly, leading us out of the closet and back into the ruined living room. “Hired guns. But they weren't sent by Victor.”
I stopped in the middle of the room, staring at the shattered windows and the bullet-riddled furniture. The cold wind howled through the broken glass, chilling me to the bone.
“If Victor is on a plane to Sicily,” I reasoned, “who sent them?”
Marco stepped out from the hallway, wiping blood from his knuckles with a pristine white handkerchief. He looked completely unfazed by the destruction.
“The Falcone family, boss,” Marco reported, his voice a low rumble. “One of the surviving attackers confessed before he passed out. The Falcones know about the three million dollars Victor stole. And they know it’s sitting in Caleb’s trust account.”
The name sent a shiver down my spine, even though I had no idea who they were.
Alessandro’s jaw tightened into iron. “Don Falcone is the head of the oldest rival syndicate in Chicago. He’s been looking for an excuse to start a war with my family for a decade. If he gets his hands on that money, he can fund an army.”
He turned to me, the dark, protective fury returning to his eyes.
“They didn't come here to kill you, Jessica,” Alessandro realized, the horrific truth dawning on him. “They came to kidnap Caleb. They know he’s the only one who can sign over the trust when he turns eighteen next week.”
I looked at my little brother, who was staring at the shattered windows, pale and terrified.
My mother had sacrificed her morals, her safety, and ultimately her life to keep Caleb safe, and now he was the target of a mafia war he didn't even understand.
“We have to run,” I whispered, grabbing Caleb’s hand. “We have to leave the city. Change our names. Disappear.”
“You can’t run from the Falcones, Jessica,” Alessandro said softly, stepping closer. “They have eyes in every city, every airport, every train station. If you try to run, they will hunt you down like animals.”
“Then what do we do?” I cried, tears of pure desperation spilling down my cheeks. “I can’t let them take him! He’s just a kid!”
Alessandro looked at me, a profound, heavy silence settling over him. He wasn't looking at me like a mafia boss offering protection; he was looking at me like a man making the most significant decision of his life.
“There is only one way to keep him safe,” Alessandro said, his voice dropping into a register that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. “We have to take the money away from them.”
“How?” I asked, confused. “You said the accounts are frozen until he turns eighteen!”
“They are frozen to the Falcones,” Alessandro corrected smoothly. “But there is a loophole in the trust documents my uncle created. A loophole designed to allow a legal spouse of the guardian to authorize an emergency withdrawal.”
I stared at him, my mind struggling to process his words.
“A legal spouse?” I repeated, the blood roaring in my ears.
Alessandro took a step closer, closing the distance between us. He didn't drop to one knee, he didn't offer a ring, but the intensity in his dark eyes was more binding than any vow.
“Marry me, Jessica,” Alessandro commanded softly, the words hanging in the dust-filled air like a lifeline. “Marry me tonight. Let me become his legal guardian. I will authorize the withdrawal, drain the trust, and use the money to dismantle the Falcone family before they can ever touch him.”
I couldn't breathe.
Marry a mafia boss. The man who had saved my life, fed me when I was starving, and stood between my brother and a bullet.
“If I do this,” I whispered, my voice trembling, “you’re declaring war on an entire syndicate for us.”
“I’m declaring war on anyone who tries to hurt what’s mine,” Alessandro promised, his hand gently cupping my cheek, his thumb brushing away a tear.
He didn't ask again. He waited, offering me the only sanctuary left in a burning world.
May you like
And as I looked into his eyes, I knew with absolute certainty that I wasn't just marrying him for protection.
“Yes,” I breathed, leaning into his touch.
