Chapter 9 - The Sins of the Father

Vanessa stopped in her tracks when she saw her father bleeding on the ground, and Luca standing tall with the ledger in his hands.

“Don Falcone,” Vanessa cried out, pointing a manicured finger at Luca. “He blew up the cabin! He tried to kill my father!”

Falcone didn't look at her. He rested his hands on his silver cane and looked directly at Luca.

“Is it true, Luca? Did you break the peace?”

Luca walked forward. He didn't flinch at the dozen assault rifles pointed at his chest.

He handed the thick, leather-bound ledger to the old Don.

“Fourteen years ago, Marcus Bellini murdered his wife, Elena,” Luca said, his voice echoing across the silent clearing. “And twelve years ago, when my father found the proof, Marcus poisoned him to keep it quiet.”

A murmur rippled through the Commission's men. Killing a sitting boss was the ultimate crime.

Falcone opened the ledger. He adjusted his reading glasses and scanned the pages. The old Don’s face hardened into a mask of pure granite.

He looked down at Marcus.

“Is this your handwriting, Marcus?” Falcone asked quietly.

Marcus didn't deny it. He didn't fight. He looked up at Falcone, his eyes hollow, completely defeated.

“Yes,” Marcus whispered.

Vanessa screamed. “No! He’s lying! Luca forged it! Dad, tell them he forged it!”

Marcus looked at his daughter. The daughter he had raised in luxury, the daughter who had inherited all his cruelty and none of his conscience.

“It’s over, Vanessa,” Marcus rasped.

He looked past her, his eyes finding mine in the crowd.

“She survived,” Marcus said, tears finally spilling down his weathered face. “Elena’s baby survived.”

Vanessa whipped her head around and stared at me. Her face twisted in a horrific mix of realization and absolute fury.

“Her?” Vanessa shrieked. “The maid? She’s a nobody!”

Vanessa lunged forward, snatching a pistol from the holster of the closest enforcer before anyone could react.

She aimed the gun directly at my chest.

“You’re not stealing my inheritance!” Vanessa screamed, her finger pulling back on the trigger.

BANG.

I flinched, waiting for the impact.

But I didn't fall.

Marcus Bellini had thrown his massive, bleeding body in front of me.

The bullet meant for me struck Marcus in the chest.

He collapsed into the mud at my feet.

Silence slammed into the clearing.

Vanessa stood frozen, the gun trembling in her hand as she stared at her father bleeding out on the ground.

Before she could move, Matteo and three enforcers tackled her to the dirt, ripping the weapon from her grip and binding her hands in zip-ties.

I dropped to my knees beside Marcus.

I didn't love this man. I didn't know him. But he had just taken a bullet for a daughter he had met ten minutes ago.

He looked up at me, struggling to breathe.

“You have her eyes,” he whispered, his voice bubbling with blood.

He reached out, his bloody hand hovering over the silver rosary resting against my coat. He didn't touch it. He just looked at it.

“Tell your mother… I’m sorry,” he gasped.

His hand fell into the mud.

Marcus Bellini was dead.

Don Falcone closed the ledger. He looked at Vanessa, who was screaming and crying as the enforcers dragged her toward the cars.

“Take her to the authorities,” Falcone ordered coldly. “She fired on her own blood. She is no longer under our protection. Let the law have her.”

Falcone turned to Luca.

“The Bellini territory is forfeit,” the old Don announced. “The Commission recognizes the Moretti family as the rightful heirs. The blood debt is settled.”

Luca nodded respectfully.

Falcone looked at me, then at my mother, who was holding me tightly. The old Don tipped his fedora.

“Your father was a brave man, Luca,” Falcone said. “He protected an innocent life. That is a legacy to be proud of.”

The black sedans drove away, taking Vanessa and the body of Marcus Bellini with them.

The flashing red and blue lights of local police cruisers finally appeared through the trees, responding to the explosion.

Luca turned to me.

He didn't care about the territory. He didn't care about the Commission.

He wrapped his arms around me and pulled me against his chest, burying his face in my hair.

“It’s over,” Luca whispered, his heart hammering against mine. “You’re safe. You’re both safe.”

I closed my eyes, breathing in the scent of smoke, rain, and his cologne.

For the first time in my entire life, the constant, suffocating weight of fear and poverty lifted from my shoulders.

I wasn't just a maid anymore. And I wasn't a mafia princess.

May you like

I was just Hannah.

And for the first time, I felt like I was exactly where I belonged.
