Chapter 7 - THE MAP IN THE BRIEFCASE

My hands were shaking as I watched Sophie reach into her purse.
What is it, baby? I signed.
She pulled out a folded piece of paper. It wasn’t a drawing or a toy. It was a thick, glossy architectural blueprint.
She handed it to me.
I unfolded it. It was a detailed schematic of the Moretti family estate—the exact mansion we were standing in. But there were red ink markings all over it. Security camera blind spots were circled. Guard patrol routes were highlighted. And one specific room—the underground vault—was marked with a large red 'X'.
I stared at it, my breath catching.
Luca crouched down beside me. He looked at the blueprint in my hands. His jaw tightened.
"Where did you get this, sweetheart?" Luca asked, his voice incredibly gentle as he looked at Sophie, signing the words simultaneously so she could understand.
In Dad's office, Sophie signed back. He left his briefcase open yesterday. I thought it was a drawing for my new school.
Luca looked at Patrick, who was still pinned to the floor by the bodyguards, his wrist bleeding.
"You weren't just marrying my sister for her dowry," Luca said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "You were planning to rob my family."
Patrick let out a pathetic, wet cough. "The syndicate... they told me if I didn't get them three million by Friday, they would kill me. I couldn't get the lake house sold fast enough. I needed a backup plan."
"So you were going to let the Chicago syndicate into my home?" Luca demanded.
"They were going to hit the vault during the honeymoon," Marco muttered from the corner, his face buried in his hands. "Patrick told me yesterday. That’s why I panicked and forced the forgery. I was trying to stop him from bringing a war to our doorstep."
Isabella looked at her uncle, betrayed all over again. "You knew he was going to rob us, and you still let me stand at the altar with him?"
"I was trying to handle it privately!" Marco pleaded.
The front doors of the mansion burst open, and Chicago police officers swarmed into the room, their weapons drawn.
"Nobody move!" the lead officer shouted.
Luca stood up slowly, raising his hands to show he wasn't a threat. "Officers. The man on the floor is Patrick Bennett. He attempted to kidnap his wife, forged real estate documents, and discharged a firearm in my home. We have it all on recording."
The police hauled Patrick to his feet. They slapped handcuffs on him, ignoring his groans of pain.
As they dragged him past me, Patrick stopped fighting. He looked at me, and then at Sophie.
"Julia," he said, his voice suddenly sounding hollow and defeated. "I’m sorry."
I looked at the man I had loved for fourteen years. The man who had kissed me this morning and eaten the sandwich I made him.
"You're not sorry you did it, Patrick," I said quietly. "You're just sorry you got caught."
The officers pulled him away, leading him out the doors and into the flashing red and blue lights of the squad cars.
Dr. Aris and Marco were escorted out next, both facing charges for their roles in the conspiracy.
The grand ballroom, which hours ago had been filled with music and laughter, was now a crime scene. But as I sat there, holding my daughter, I felt a massive, crushing weight lift off my chest.
Isabella knelt beside me. She looked at Sophie, then at me.
"Julia," she said softly. "I owe you my life. If you hadn't come here tonight..." She shook her head, unable to finish the sentence.
"We saved each other," I replied, squeezing her hand.
Luca walked over and offered me his hand. I took it, and he pulled me to my feet, helping Sophie up as well.
"My lawyers will ensure the deed to your lake house is corrected by tomorrow morning," Luca promised. "Patrick will never touch your assets, or your family, again."
I looked at him, overwhelmed by gratitude. "Thank you. For believing me. For protecting my daughter."
Luca smiled, a real, genuine smile. "Family protects family, Julia."
I thought it was finally over. The nightmare was done.
May you like
But then, one of the police officers walked back into the room. He was holding Patrick's white dinner jacket, which had been left on a chair during the struggle.
"Mr. Moretti," the officer said, holding out a small, locked wooden box. "We found this in the suspect's coat pocket. We need you to identify it."
