Chapter 9 - THE HAPPY ENDING

One Year Later.

The sun was setting over the serene, sparkling waters of Lake Michigan.

I stood on the expansive wooden deck of Nicholas’s private lake house, a cool evening breeze rustling the skirt of my simple white sundress.

The chaos of the city, the Romanos, and the trauma of the past year felt like a distant nightmare.

The titanium key had been used to empty the Swiss safety deposit box. The ledgers inside had provided the FBI with enough evidence to dismantle the Romano crime family permanently.

Silvio had been found dead in a ditch two days after the siege, just as Nicholas had predicted.

And Andrew... Andrew was a ghost I no longer allowed to haunt me.

The heavy glass door slid open behind me.

I smiled, turning around.

My mother wheeled herself out onto the deck. She looked healthier, brighter, and more at peace than she had in decades. The stroke had taken her mobility, but living under Nicholas’s protection had given her back her dignity.

“It’s beautiful out here tonight, Sarah,” my mother said, breathing in the fresh air.

“It is, Mom,” I agreed, walking over to rest my hand on her shoulder.

A moment later, Nicholas stepped out onto the deck.

He was wearing a casual gray linen shirt, the sleeves rolled up to reveal his tattoos. He looked relaxed, the heavy burden of the mafia boss completely absent from his posture.

He walked over to my mother, holding two small velvet boxes in his hand.

He knelt beside her wheelchair.

“Carol,” Nicholas said softly, his dark eyes filled with absolute respect. “I made a promise to my father’s memory that I would protect you. But I want to make a new promise.”

He opened the first box.

Inside was a delicate, vintage gold ring.

“This was my mother’s ring,” Nicholas said. “I want to marry your daughter. And I want your blessing.”

My mother gasped, tears instantly welling in her eyes. She reached out with her good hand, cupping Nicholas’s cheek.

“You have it, Nicholas,” she wept, smiling brightly. “You have always had it.”

Nicholas smiled, a rare, breathtaking expression.

He stood up and turned to me.

My heart was hammering against my ribs, a chaotic flutter of pure, unfiltered joy.

He didn't drop to one knee. He simply walked into my space, closing the distance between us until I could feel the warmth radiating from his chest.

He opened the second box.

It wasn't a diamond. It wasn't an oversized, flashy mobster ring.

It was a beautiful, elegant sapphire, surrounded by tiny, delicate diamonds.

“I met you when you were hiding under my coat,” Nicholas murmured, his voice low and intimate. “And I promised you that you were safe.”

He reached out, taking my trembling left hand in his.

“I don't want to just keep you safe anymore, Sarah,” Nicholas said, his dark eyes locking onto mine with fierce, unyielding devotion. “I want to give you the world. If you’ll let me.”

Tears spilled over my lashes, but this time, there was no fear behind them.

“I don't want the world, Nicholas,” I whispered, stepping into his arms. “I just want you.”

He slipped the sapphire ring onto my finger. It was a perfect fit.

Then he leaned down and kissed me, a deep, passionate promise that tasted like forever.

When we finally pulled apart, I looked over his shoulder.

My mother was smiling, wiping her eyes with a tissue.

For thirty years, she had carried a secret that had almost destroyed us. But in the end, it was that very secret that had led me to the man standing in front of me.

I looked down at the sapphire sparkling on my finger, then up into the dark, fiercely loving eyes of my soon-to-be husband.

The past was finally buried.

May you like

And for the first time in my life, the future was entirely mine.

The end.
