Chapter 12 - THE FAMILY WE CHOOSE

Six months later, the bitter Chicago winter had melted into a bright, warm spring.

I stood in the center of Samuel’s bedroom, smiling as I looked at the walls. It was completely unrecognizable from the sterile, empty room Vanessa had tried to force upon him.

The Chicago Cubs posters were back, framed beautifully this time. The oak bookshelves were overflowing with baseball trophies, mystery novels, and a growing collection of vintage comic books Luca had bought at an auction.

But the most important part of the room was the massive corkboard hanging above the desk.

It was completely covered.

There were dozens of photographs of Frank holding a tiny Samuel. There were pictures of Aunt June, who, despite her betrayal, Samuel had chosen to forgive, sending her a letter every week in the nursing home Luca had placed her in. There was the child’s drawing Samuel had made for Frank years ago, which Luca had framed in gold.

And right in the center of the board, pinned carefully above everything else, was a brand new photograph.

It was taken three weeks ago, on a sunny afternoon in the mansion’s sprawling backyard. In the photo, Luca was smiling, his arm wrapped tightly around my waist. I was laughing, looking up at him, wearing a diamond ring that caught the sunlight. And standing right in front of us, wearing his father’s oversized brown wool coat despite the warm weather, was Samuel.

He was beaming, holding the official, finalized adoption papers.

"Hannah?"

I turned around. Samuel was standing in the doorway, his backpack slung over one shoulder. He had grown three inches in the last six months, his shoulders broadening, looking more like Luca every day.

"Hey, sweetheart," I smiled. "Are you ready for school?"

"Yeah," he said, walking into the room. He stopped next to me, looking up at the corkboard. He reached out and gently touched the silver bracelet dangling from a pushpin—his mother's bracelet, the one that had saved his inheritance.

"Do you think Dad would be happy?" Samuel asked quietly.

I wrapped my arm around his shoulders and squeezed. "I don't think he would just be happy, Sammy. I think he'd be incredibly proud. Look at everything you've overcome."

Samuel smiled, leaning into my side. "I'm glad you didn't leave that morning."

"Me too, kiddo," I whispered, kissing the top of his head. "Me too."

"Alright, let's go, slowpoke!" Luca’s voice boomed from the hallway. "If you make me late for this meeting with Sterling, I'm making you walk to school!"

Samuel rolled his eyes, grabbing his baseball cap off the desk. "He wouldn't make me walk. He's too soft."

I laughed out loud. "Don't let the men in his syndicate hear you say that."

We walked downstairs together. Luca was standing in the foyer, wearing a sharp navy blue suit, checking his watch. He looked up as we descended the stairs, and the fierce, predatory businessman vanished, replaced immediately by the devoted father and fiancé.

"There they are," Luca smiled, walking over to meet us at the bottom of the stairs.

He kissed Samuel on the head, ruffling his hair. "Car is waiting out front, buddy. Go claim the aux cord before the driver puts on talk radio."

"Yes!" Samuel cheered, sprinting out the heavy oak front doors.

Luca turned to me, wrapping his arms around my waist and pulling me flush against his chest.

"And how is my beautiful soon-to-be wife doing this morning?" he murmured, leaning down to press a soft kiss to my lips.

"I'm perfect," I smiled, resting my hands on his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart. "My mom called this morning. Her scans were completely clear. The doctors said she can travel for the wedding."

Luca’s eyes lit up. "Hannah, that's incredible news."

"It's because of you," I said softly. "You saved her, Luca. You saved both of us."

Luca shook his head, his expression turning deeply serious.

"You have it backward, Hannah," he whispered, brushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear. "Before you walked into that dining room and stood up to Vanessa, this house was a tomb. I was a ghost, and Sammy was drowning. You brought the light back. You saved us."

I leaned up and kissed him again, pouring all the love and gratitude I had into the moment.

Outside, a car horn honked loudly.

"Hey lovebirds!" Samuel yelled from the open window of the SUV. "Some of us have geometry first period!"

Luca pulled back, laughing. He grabbed my hand, interlocking his fingers with mine.

"Come on," Luca said, his eyes shining with a happiness I knew would last a lifetime. "Let's go take our kid to school."

We walked out into the bright Chicago morning together. The heavy oak doors closed behind us, but this time, they didn't lock anyone out. They were just keeping the family safe inside.
