Chapter 2 - THE GIRL IN THE RED COAT

The restaurant doors swung slowly open.
I stood behind Sebastian’s broad shoulders, my breath caught in my throat, terrified of what I was about to see.
Louise walked in first.
She looked entirely different from the woman I knew. The elegant, confident best friend who always smelled of expensive perfume and wore perfectly tailored suits was gone.
Her hair was disheveled. Her hands were shaking. She wore a trench coat buttoned unevenly, her eyes darting nervously around the room until they found me.
But it wasn't Louise who made the blood drain from my face.
It was the person walking closely behind her.
A young woman, no more than twenty-two years old, wearing a bright red winter coat.
She had dark hair, pale skin, and terrified, wide brown eyes.
I stared at her.
"My God," I whispered, stepping around Sebastian.
Sebastian immediately put his arm out, blocking me. "Do you know her, Mara?"
"I..." My mind spun, trying to piece together the shattered fragments of my memory. "I don't know her name. But I know that coat."
The girl stopped a few feet away, trembling violently.
"September eighteenth," I said slowly, the memories forcing their way through the fog of my head injury. "It was raining. I was carrying laundry up the back stairs. And... and I heard an argument."
Louise looked down at the floor, tears spilling over her lashes.
"Graham was arguing with someone," I continued, my voice gaining strength. "A girl. She was crying. And when I opened the door..."
The girl in the red coat finally spoke.
Her voice was barely a whisper. "When you opened the door, you saw us."
"You pushed me," I realized, the horrifying memory finally snapping into focus.
The girl shook her head frantically. "No! I didn't push you! He did!"
Sebastian went completely still.
He looked at Daniel. "Lock the doors. Nobody else comes in."
Daniel nodded, signaling two massive security guards who immediately bolted the heavy restaurant doors.
Sebastian turned back to the girl. "Who are you?"
"My name is Chloe," she said, her voice shaking uncontrollably. "I'm... I was Graham's assistant at the architectural firm."
I felt physically sick.
Graham's assistant. The sweet girl who sent me flowers on my birthday. The girl Graham always said was 'too young to handle the pressure.'
"Graham and I were..." Chloe swallowed hard, looking at me with pure shame. "We were having an affair."
The words hit me like a physical blow.
Eleven months.
Eleven months of being told I was crazy. Eleven months of being locked in my own home, drugged, and gaslit by a husband who claimed he was only trying to protect me.
"That night on the stairs," Chloe sobbed, "I came to the house because I was pregnant."
The room spun. I grabbed the back of the chair to steady myself.
"I told him he had to tell you," Chloe cried. "He was furious. He grabbed my arm. You opened the door to the stairs, and he panicked. He shoved you backward. You fell."
Louise covered her face, weeping silently.
"Why didn't you call an ambulance?" I demanded, the anger finally burning through my fear. "I was bleeding! I was unconscious for four days!"
"He told me to run!" Chloe yelled defensively. "He said if the police came, they'd blame me! He said he'd handle it!"
Sebastian’s voice cut through the panic, cold and precise.
"And you," Sebastian said, turning his dark eyes onto Louise. "You signed a document claiming Mara was mentally unstable a week before this accident happened."
Louise flinched as if she'd been struck.
"Graham planned it," Louise confessed, her voice thick with guilt. "He knew about Chloe. He knew he wanted a divorce. But if he divorced Mara, she would get half the firm. She invested her inheritance to start it."
I stared at the woman I had called my best friend for twenty years.
"He wanted you committed, Mara," Louise whispered. "If you were declared mentally unfit, he would gain full conservatorship over your assets. The accident just sped up his timeline."
"And what did he give you?" I asked, my voice cracking. "What was my life worth to you, Louise?"
Louise couldn't look at me. "He... he promised to pay off my husband's gambling debts."
I felt numb.
The betrayal was so absolute, so complete, it didn't even feel real.
"He put a tracker in the sweater I gave you," Louise sobbed. "He told me he just wanted to make sure you got to the shelter safely. But when I saw him leave with the police... I knew he was coming to take you back to that locked room."
Sebastian didn't yell. He didn't threaten them.
He simply looked at Daniel.
"Get them out of my sight," Sebastian ordered softly. "Hold them in the back office until I decide what to do with them."
Daniel moved immediately, grabbing both women by the arms and dragging them toward the back of the restaurant.
I stood in the center of the room, entirely alone.
The life I thought I had was a carefully constructed lie. My husband was a monster. My best friend was an accomplice.
My knees finally gave out.
I collapsed onto the floor, pulling the oversized blue cardigan around myself, sobbing uncontrollably.
Sebastian knelt beside me.
He didn't touch me. He didn't tell me it was going to be okay.
He just sat there, a silent, immovable presence in the storm of my shattered life.
After several minutes, I finally looked up.
"He's going to come back," I whispered, terrified. "Graham is going to come back with a court order. He'll say I'm unstable. He'll take me away."
Sebastian reached into his jacket pocket.
He pulled out a small, heavy silver object and placed it on the floor between us.
It was an antique silver lighter, engraved with an intricate crest.
"My family has owned this city for three generations, Mara," Sebastian said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous rumble. "Judges, politicians, police... they all answer to me."
He picked up the lighter and flicked it open. A small, bright flame illuminated the dark tattoos on his hand.
"Your husband thought he could walk into my restaurant and take something from my chair."
Sebastian looked at me, his dark eyes burning with a terrifying promise.
"Graham Tate is about to find out exactly what happens when you try to steal from a Romano."
May you like
He snapped the lighter shut.
"We aren't going to hide you, Mara. We are going to burn his life to the ground."
