Chapter 5 - THE BURNER PHONE IN THE SCRUB ROOM

Enzo stared at the aggressive cursive on the back of the butterfly drawing.

The DeLuca bloodline ends tonight.

This wasn't his mother’s handwriting. Claudia Bellini was a master of manipulation, but she never left physical threats. She operated in whispers and shadows.

Bianca hadn't written this either. She lacked the tactical insight to orchestrate a hospital-wide failure.

Someone else had breached Elena's room before the chaos began.

The heavy double doors of the corridor banged open as a surgical team rushed Elena’s bed out of the room.

Enzo caught a terrifying, fleeting glimpse of his wife. An oxygen mask covered her face. Her eyes were closed. Blood soaked through the stark white sheets, a horrifying contrast that made Enzo’s stomach turn.

Anthony walked right beside the moving bed, gripping the metal rail, his face pale and entirely focused.

He didn't even look at Enzo as they rushed past.

“We have three minutes before placental abruption becomes fatal to both!” Dr. Harris shouted to the anesthesiologist.

They disappeared behind the secure, automated doors of the surgical wing. The red OPERATING sign illuminated above the threshold like a judgment.

Enzo was left standing in the empty hallway, holding the crumpled drawing.

His phone vibrated in his jacket pocket.

He pulled it out. It was a blocked number.

He answered it, his voice a low, lethal growl. “Who is this?”

“Did you find the drawing, Enzo?”

The voice was male. Deep, calm, and slightly distorted by a scrambler.

“Who the hell is this?” Enzo demanded, pacing the corridor.

“A ghost,” the voice replied smoothly. “Your mother thought she was hiring my men to eliminate Anthony. Bianca thought she was using my men to eliminate your wife. But neither of those women realized they were simply opening the door for me.”

Enzo’s mind raced, filtering through thousands of rivals, debts, and enemies.

“What do you want?”

“I already have what I want, Enzo. I have you, standing outside an operating room, entirely helpless.” The man chuckled softly. “But I am a merciful man. I have a proposal.”

“I don't negotiate with cowards who hide behind pregnant women.”

“You will today,” the voice countered. “Because in exactly four minutes, the backup generators for the surgical wing are going to fail. And since my men already severed the main power line to the hospital… the operating room will go pitch black.”

Enzo froze.

“You cut the power to a hospital?”

“Only the surgical wing. Precision is everything.”

Enzo looked up at the ceiling lights. They were already flickering slightly.

“If the power drops,” the voice continued, “Dr. Harris won't be able to see the hemorrhage. The monitors will die. Your wife bleeds out in the dark, and your daughter suffocates in the womb.”

Enzo gripped the phone so tightly the screen cracked.

“Name your price,” Enzo said. There was no hesitation. No pride. Just absolute, terrifying desperation.

“Ah. The great Don finally bends the knee,” the man mocked. “The price is your empire, Enzo. I want the digital keys to the offshore accounts, the routing numbers for the shipping ports, and your formal, written abdication sent to the Five Families.”

“Done,” Enzo said instantly.

The voice paused, clearly surprised by how quickly Enzo surrendered an empire that had taken three generations to build.

“I want the transfer initiated now,” the man demanded.

“I can't do that from a hospital hallway,” Enzo snapped. “I need a secure terminal.”

“Then find one. You have three minutes.”

The line went dead.

Enzo didn't panic. Panic was for victims.

He sprinted toward the surgical wing, ignoring the RESTRICTED AREA signs. He burst through the swinging doors into the pre-op scrub room.

Two nurses shrieked in surprise as the Mafia boss tore through the sterile environment.

“Where is the nearest secure network terminal?!” Enzo roared.

A terrified male nurse pointed toward a small, glass-walled administrative office attached to the scrub room.

Enzo rushed in. A young resident doctor was sitting at the computer, typing notes.

Enzo grabbed the back of the doctor’s chair and physically yanked it away from the desk, sending the young man sprawling onto the linoleum floor.

“Get out,” Enzo ordered, his eyes wild.

The doctor scrambled out of the office without a word.

Enzo dropped into the chair. His fingers flew across the keyboard. He didn't care about encryption protocols. He didn't care about the FBI tracking the sudden movement of billions of dollars.

He accessed the offshore mainframe.

The screen glowed blue, displaying the lifeblood of the Bellini syndicate. Money, properties, blackmail files, trade routes.

A small, blinking notification popped up on the screen.

It was a countdown timer, planted by the hacker on the other end of the line.

01:45.

One minute and forty-five seconds until the power failed.

Enzo began typing the transfer codes. It required a twelve-step authentication process he had designed himself to be impenetrable. Now, that same security was costing him precious seconds.

01:12.

He typed the seventh code.

Suddenly, the heavy door of the administrative office clicked shut.

Enzo didn't look up. “Get out!”

“I’m afraid I can’t do that, Boss.”

Enzo froze.

He slowly raised his eyes from the monitor.

Standing on the other side of the desk, holding a suppressed pistol aimed directly at Enzo’s chest, was Daniel.

His most trusted captain. The man who had guarded Elena for the last six months.

“Daniel,” Enzo breathed, the horrific realization settling over him.

“Step away from the keyboard, Enzo,” Daniel said, his voice the exact same calm, deep tone Enzo had just heard on the scrambled phone call.

“You’re the ghost,” Enzo realized.

Daniel smiled, stepping closer to the desk.

“Your mother hired me. Bianca trusted me. Anthony tolerated me,” Daniel said smoothly. “But nobody noticed me. That’s the beauty of being the muscle. You never suspect the guard dog.”

00:45.

“Daniel, let me finish the transfer,” Enzo pleaded, his hands hovering over the keyboard. “You want the empire. Take it. But let the power stay on. Let my wife live.”

Daniel shook his head slowly.

“You misunderstand, Enzo,” Daniel said softly. “I don’t want your empire. I want the money, yes. But I also want the throne empty.”

Daniel reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, black remote detonator.

“If Elena survives, Anthony has a reason to unite his family with yours against me,” Daniel explained logically. “But if she dies on that table tonight… Anthony will blame you. He’ll go to war against your remaining loyalists. You’ll destroy each other, and I will sweep up the ashes.”

00:20.

“Please,” Enzo begged. The great Don, who had never bowed to anyone, fell to his knees beside the desk. “Take my life. Let them live.”

Daniel looked down at him with a cold, hollow pity.

“Your life is already over, Enzo.”

Daniel raised his thumb, hovering over the red button of the detonator to cut the power early.

But as his thumb pressed down, a sharp, metallic clink echoed from the floor behind him.

Daniel frowned, turning his head slightly.

Rolling slowly across the linoleum, stopping right at Daniel’s feet, was a silver pocket watch.

Anthony’s pocket watch.

May you like

Before Daniel could react, a massive shadow erupted from the ceiling air vent above him.
