Chapter 7 - THE FAMILY HEIRLOOM IN THE VAULT

The heavy mahogany doors of the dining room crashed open.

Marco walked in, rain dripping from his black coat, his suppressed pistol raised.

The six Dons of the council froze.

Vincent, sitting near the head of the table, narrowed his eyes. “Marco, what is the meaning of this? Put the gun down.”

Marco didn't speak. He walked slowly toward Vincent, the silence in the room thick and suffocating.

“You killed Sabrina,” Marco stated flatly.

Vincent scoffed, glancing at the other bosses. “The boy has lost his mind. I haven't left my estate in three days.”

Marco reached into his pocket and threw the silver rosary onto the table. It slid across the polished wood and stopped right in front of Vincent’s hands.

“My mother found this wrapped around her throat,” Marco lied smoothly. “Your signature, Vincent.”

Vincent looked at the rosary. His confident facade cracked for a fraction of a second.

“That proves nothing,” Vincent said, standing up. “Anyone can buy a rosary.”

“But not everyone can buy my mistress,” Marco said, closing the distance until he was inches from the older Don. “You used her to distract me. You used her to dig up blackmail on my father to steal my territory.”

The other Dons shifted uncomfortably, their hands drifting toward their jackets.

“If you shoot me, Marco, the Commission will execute you,” Vincent warned, his voice low and dangerous. “You have no proof I conspired against you. Only the word of a dead whore and your hysterical mother.”

“I don't need the Commission,” Marco whispered. “This is my house.”

Marco raised the pistol, aiming it directly between Vincent’s eyes.

“Wait!” a voice shouted from the hallway.

Marco didn't lower the gun, but he glanced toward the door.

Daniel ran into the dining room, looking panicked.

“Boss, wait. You need to see this.”

Daniel held up a heavy, leather-bound ledger.

“We swept Vincent’s car parked out front,” Daniel explained, breathing heavily. “We found his financial manifest.”

Vincent’s face went completely pale.

Marco kept the gun on Vincent but held out his left hand. “Read it.”

Daniel flipped the ledger open.

“It’s a list of payouts, sir. To Sabrina. To the coroner who faked the autopsy reports seventeen years ago. But there’s one more name on the payroll.”

Daniel swallowed hard.

“Rosa Bellini.”

The room started to spin.

Marco lowered the gun a fraction of an inch. “What did you just say?”

“Your mother has been receiving monthly payments from Vincent’s shell corporation for the last five years, boss,” Daniel read, his voice shaking. “Millions of dollars.”

Answer one: Vincent hadn't orchestrated the coup alone. He had an inside partner.

Open two: Why would Rosa, the fierce protector of the Bellini empire, sell out her own son to a rival Don?

Vincent began to laugh. A cruel, triumphant sound.

“You really are blind, Marco,” Vincent sneered. “You thought your mother was setting a trap for me today? She set a trap for you.”

Marco stared at the older man, his mind reeling. “My mother wouldn't betray me.”

“Your mother betrayed your father twenty years ago!” Vincent roared. “She was the one who told me about the blackmail! She sold your father’s secrets to me to buy her own safety! And when you became boss, she realized you were too weak to hold the empire. So we made a deal.”

Vincent pointed at Marco’s chest.

“She gets half the territory, and I get to eliminate you.”

Marco took a step back, the betrayal hitting him like a physical blow.

He turned and bolted out of the dining room, sprinting toward the front driveway where Catherine and Rosa had been standing.

He burst through the front doors.

The rain was still pouring. The driveway was empty.

Rosa’s car was gone.

“Daniel!” Marco yelled, running back inside. “Track my mother’s car! Now!”

Daniel was already on his phone. “GPS shows she’s heading downtown, sir. Toward the central bank vault.”

Marco’s blood turned to ice.

The central bank vault. Where the Bellini family kept their most prized possession.

The Don’s ring. The heavy gold family heirloom that officially transferred power from one boss to the next.

If Rosa gave that ring to Vincent, the transfer of power would be recognized by the Commission. Marco would be officially ousted.

Marco ran to his SUV, throwing it into gear, and tore out of the estate.

He drove recklessly through the slick streets of New York, his mind racing.

His mother had played everyone. She had used Catherine’s grief, Sabrina’s death, and Marco’s guilt to orchestrate a flawless coup.

He slammed on the brakes outside the massive stone pillars of the central bank.

He sprinted inside, flashing his syndicate credentials to bypass the terrified security guards.

He descended the marble stairs to the subterranean vault room.

The heavy steel door was wide open.

Marco drew his weapon and stepped inside.

Standing in the center of the vault, holding the velvet box containing the Don’s ring, was Rosa.

She looked up as Marco entered. There was no fear on her face. Only a profound, tragic sadness.

“Hello, Marco,” Rosa said quietly.

“Put the ring down, Mother,” Marco ordered, his gun aimed at her chest.

Rosa didn't drop the box. She held it tighter.

“I had to do it, Marco,” Rosa whispered, tears filling her eyes. “You were destroying the family. You left your wife. You let a mistress manipulate you. You were weak.”

“So you sold me to Vincent?” Marco shouted, his voice echoing off the steel deposit boxes.

“I didn't sell you to Vincent!” Rosa snapped back. “I used Vincent to get rid of Sabrina! I knew he was ambitious, so I paid him to eliminate the threat to your marriage! But then he got greedy and wanted the throne!”

Marco stared at her, confused.

“Daniel read the ledger, Mother. You’ve been taking payouts from Vincent for five years.”

Rosa gave a bitter, exhausted laugh.

“I wasn't taking payouts, Marco. I was paying him.”

Marco lowered his gun slightly. “Paying him for what?”

Rosa closed her eyes, a single tear escaping.

“To keep him from telling the Commission the truth about your brother.”
