Chapter 12 - A NEW CHAPTER BEGINS

Luca and I jumped apart, both of us flushing red.

“What is it, Danny?” Luca asked, clearing his throat and running a hand through his hair.

Daniel ran over and dropped the heavy, dust-covered photo album onto the coffee table. He flipped it open to the very last page.

“Look,” Daniel said, pointing to a polaroid picture tucked halfway behind a larger photograph.

Luca leaned forward. I looked over his shoulder.

It was a picture of Elena, Daniel’s mother, heavily pregnant and smiling brightly. She was standing in the exact spot in the dining room where we had taken our family photo three months ago.

But it wasn't the picture that made Luca freeze.

It was the handwritten note scribbled on the white border of the polaroid.

“To whoever loves him next: Don’t let him forget how to smile. Love, Elena.”

Luca stared at the handwriting. His chest heaved as he let out a long, shaky breath.

For ten years, he had carried the crushing guilt of Elena’s death, believing he wasn't allowed to be happy again. He had built an empire of ice and steel to protect himself from feeling anything. Vanessa had almost destroyed him by exploiting that guilt.

But this note… it was a blessing. A permission from the past to finally embrace the future.

Luca reached out and touched the faded ink. Then, he turned to look at me.

There were tears in his eyes, but a genuine, beautiful smile spread across his face.

“She knew,” Luca whispered. “She knew I’d need someone to save me.”

I reached out and took his hand, lacing my fingers through his. “You saved yourself, Luca. You fought for your family.”

Daniel looked between us, a huge grin breaking out on his face. “Does this mean Hannah is staying forever?”

Luca laughed, pulling Daniel into a hug with his free arm. “If she’ll have us, Danny. Yes. She’s staying forever.”

The next day, we hosted a very different kind of dinner party.

There were no stuffy guests, no crystal champagne flutes, no tense whispers, and no fake fiancées.

It was just my mother, who had moved into her beautiful new home and was glowing with health, sitting across from Teresa, who was laughing loudly and sharing stories about Luca as a baby. Daniel was showing my mother his latest drawing, and the house was filled with the smell of fresh pasta and warm bread.

I stood by the window, watching the snow fall over the Chicago skyline, wearing the silver rosary around my wrist.

Luca walked up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist and resting his chin on my shoulder.

“What are you thinking about?” he murmured.

I leaned back against his chest, feeling the steady, strong beat of his heart.

“I’m thinking about how much can change in a year,” I said softly. “From a maid terrified of an electricity bill, to… this.”

Luca kissed my cheek. “You were never just a maid, Hannah. You were the heart this house was missing.”

“Hannah! Luca! Come here!” Teresa called out happily from the table.

We turned around. The photographer we had hired for the evening—the same one from three months ago—was setting up his tripod.

“Time for a new picture,” Teresa beamed.

Luca took my hand, and we walked over to the table. We gathered around, a messy, beautiful, imperfect family. My mother held Daniel’s hand, Teresa sat proudly in the center, and Luca pulled me tight against his side.

“Ready?” the photographer asked.

“Ready,” Luca said, looking down at me with absolute love in his eyes.

The flash went off, capturing a memory that no one would ever want to forget.

And this time, Teresa Moretti’s smile was the brightest one in the room.
