Chapter 8 - THE VAULT

The heavy silence of the basement pressed in from all sides.

Vanessa’s hands dropped from the vault keys, trembling uncontrollably. She took a step back, her back hitting the cold steel of the massive door.

“Luca,” she choked out, her voice barely a whisper.

Luca walked slowly down the center aisle, his dark eyes fixed on her with the intensity of a predator cornering its prey. He didn't rush. He didn't yell. The sheer, quiet power radiating from him was far more terrifying than any weapon.

“You copied my key,” Luca said, his voice eerily calm.

“I... I was just securing our future, darling,” Vanessa stammered, attempting a pathetic, desperate smile. “Carmela told me the Romanos were going to take the restaurant. I came to get the bonds to protect them for us!”

Luca stopped a few feet away from her.

He tilted his head slightly, as if examining a particularly disgusting insect.

“Do you know what I hate more than a thief, Vanessa?” Luca asked softly.

She shook her head, tears spilling down her ruined makeup.

“A liar who thinks I’m stupid.”

Luca reached out with lightning speed, grabbing Vanessa by the lapels of her expensive coat and throwing her effortlessly away from the vault.

She crumpled onto the concrete floor, sobbing hysterically.

“Please, Luca! I’ll leave the city! I’ll never come back! Just let me go!”

Luca ignored her. He turned to the vault, gripping the two keys she had left in the locks. He turned them simultaneously.

The heavy internal mechanisms groaned and clicked into place.

Luca gripped the massive steel wheel and spun it. The door hissed, unsealing with a heavy rush of air. He pulled it open.

Inside the small, reinforced room were rows of safety deposit boxes and stacks of bearer bonds worth millions of dollars.

But Luca didn't look at the money.

He walked into the vault and pulled out a small, ornate wooden box resting on the top shelf.

He walked back out, closing the heavy steel door behind him.

He looked down at Vanessa, who was still cowering on the floor.

“You thought this was about money,” Luca said, his voice filled with profound disgust. “You thought I would kill you over paper bonds.”

He opened the wooden box.

Inside sat a simple, worn, silver locket.

“This vault wasn't built to hide money,” Luca said quietly. “My father built this vault to protect the only thing in this world he truly valued.”

He held up the locket.

“This belonged to my mother. She wore it when she worked double shifts as a waitress upstairs to keep food on our table. My father built a fortress to protect a twenty-dollar locket because it reminded him of the woman who loved him before he had a dime.”

Luca looked at Vanessa.

“You will never understand loyalty. You will never understand sacrifice. And you will certainly never understand love.”

He closed the box.

“Matteo,” Luca ordered.

“Yes, Boss.”

“Take her to the police station. Hand her over to the detectives investigating the Romano money laundering operations. Tell them she’s the courier. Let her rot in federal prison for the next twenty years.”

Vanessa screamed, thrashing wildly as Matteo grabbed her by the arms and dragged her up the basement stairs.

“You can't do this to me, Luca! I am a Bellini!” she shrieked, her voice echoing until the heavy door slammed shut.

The basement fell silent again.

Luca stood alone in front of the vault, staring down at the wooden box in his hands.

The tension in his broad shoulders finally seemed to release. He let out a long, heavy breath, the ruthless mafia boss fading away, leaving behind a deeply exhausted man.

I walked slowly toward him.

“Luca?” I asked softly.

He turned to look at me. His dark eyes were softer now, stripped of the armor he wore for the rest of the world.

“She almost took the one thing I had left of my mother,” he whispered.

I reached out, gently placing my hand over his on the wooden box.

“She didn't,” I said firmly. “Because you didn't let her.”

Luca looked down at my hand covering his. He turned his palm up, lacing his fingers through mine. His grip was strong, warm, and unapologetically possessive.

“Rachel,” Luca murmured, taking a step closer to me.

“Yes?”

“When I asked you to come with me tonight, I didn't want you as a distraction.”

My heart skipped a beat. “You didn't?”

He shook his head slowly, his eyes dropping to my lips before rising to meet my gaze again.

“I wanted you with me because you’re the only person I trust at my back,” he said.

The air in the cold basement suddenly felt electric.

Luca reached up with his free hand, his fingers gently threading through the hair at the nape of my neck.

“I told you earlier tonight that you were the only honest thing in my life,” he whispered, leaning down, his face inches from mine. “I was wrong.”

“You were?” I breathed, unable to look away from his intense, dark eyes.

“Yes,” he murmured against my lips. “You’re not just the most honest thing. You’re the best thing.”

He kissed me.

It wasn't a tentative, careful kiss. It was deep, demanding, and filled with a fierce, burning passion that consumed me entirely.

I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him closer, returning the kiss with everything I had. The fear, the chaos of the night, the impossible gap between a maid and a mafia boss—it all melted away in the dark basement of the restaurant.

When we finally pulled apart, both breathing heavily, Luca rested his forehead against mine.

“No more maid uniforms, Rachel,” he whispered fiercely.

May you like

I smiled, my heart soaring.

“I think my mother could sew me something better,” I replied.
