Chapter 3 - The Child He Actually Wanted

I stared at the black-and-white sonogram in my trembling hands.

Eight years ago.

A year after my secret divorce. A year after my supposed "funeral" was cancelled.

"Who..." I choked on the word, looking up at Vincent. "Whose baby is this?"

Vincent’s face drained of all color. He looked like a man standing on the gallows, watching the lever get pulled.

"Evelyn, don't listen to her," he pleaded, taking a step toward me.

"Stay back!" I screamed, holding up the sonogram. "Is it hers? Did you get my sister pregnant eight years ago?"

"No!" Vincent yelled, his voice echoing off the stained glass windows. "I never touched Claire back then! I swear to God!"

"Then whose is it?" Anthony demanded, stepping firmly in front of me, shielding me from his father. My seventeen-year-old boy looked so much like Vincent in that moment—tall, broad-shouldered, with the same fierce, protective jawline. But his eyes held nothing but disgust.

Vincent swallowed hard. He looked past us, toward the back of the chapel.

Toward Celeste.

The federal agents flanking her shifted slightly. Celeste, the woman I had been told for years was just a cheap mistress, stood perfectly straight in her tailored navy trench coat.

She didn't look ashamed. She looked devastated.

"It was mine," Celeste said quietly.

The chapel fell into a suffocating silence.

"You?" I whispered, my mind struggling to process the betrayal. "You were pregnant with my husband's child eight years ago?"

"He wasn't your husband," Celeste replied, her voice steady but laced with a profound sorrow. "You were already divorced. He was legally a single man. And he was trying to leave the syndicate for good."

My father let out a booming laugh. "Ah, the great Vincent Moretti! Ready to throw away an empire for a federal informant!"

I spun around. "Informant?"

Celeste stepped forward, pulling a gold badge from her pocket. "Special Agent Celeste Vargas, FBI Organized Crime Division."

My knees nearly buckled.

"Vincent was my CI," Celeste continued, looking directly into my eyes. "He was feeding me information to build a RICO case against your father. We were going to bring down the whole family. And somewhere along the line... we crossed a boundary."

She looked at Vincent, and for the first time, I saw the tragic, undeniable look of a woman who deeply loved a man she could never have.

"We were going to Montana," Celeste whispered. "We were going to disappear into witness protection and raise our baby."

"But you didn't," I said, my voice hollow.

Celeste placed a hand over her flat stomach. "No. Because your father found out."

My mother let out a jagged sob, raising her gun slightly. "Richard found out about the federal case. He didn't know about the baby. But he knew Vincent was talking."

"So how did you stop him?" Anthony asked, his voice shaking with a rage I had never heard before. He glared at my father. "What did you do?"

Richard smiled, adjusting his silk tie. "I simply reminded Vincent of his priorities. I told him if he got on that plane with the federal agent, I would have you, Evelyn, and Anthony killed. All three of you. By morning."

I looked at Vincent. The man who had lied to me for seventeen years.

"You stayed," I whispered, the realization hitting me like a physical blow. "You gave up the woman you loved, and your unborn child... to protect us."

Vincent closed his eyes, a single tear escaping. "Celeste lost the baby a week later. The stress. The heartbreak. I destroyed her life to save yours."

For a split second, I didn't see a monster. I saw a man trapped in a cage, bleeding out to keep the wolves away from his family.

But then Claire ruined it.

"Don't give him too much credit, Evelyn," Claire sneered, stepping closer to my father. "Vincent didn't stay just for you. He stayed for the ledger."

My father's smile instantly vanished. "Claire. Silence."

"Why?" Claire laughed, her eyes wild. "The feds are already here! Tell them, Richard! Tell them what Vincent has been hiding in Anthony's bedroom for the last ten years!"

I froze. "What?"

"The missing offshore ledger," Claire smiled, pulling a small, child's velvet jewelry box from her pocket. I recognized it immediately. It was the box Anthony kept his first baby teeth in.

"I found it this morning," Claire whispered, opening the box.

Inside wasn't teeth. It was a tiny, encrypted micro-SD card.

"Vincent hid the evidence to destroy your father inside your son's bedroom," Claire laughed.

Suddenly, my mother screamed. "Richard, no!"

May you like

I turned just in time to see my father pull a silver derringer from his coat sleeve and point it directly at my seventeen-year-old son.

"Give me the card, Claire," my father ordered coldly. "Or the boy dies right now."
