Chapter 6 - THE IRON PIPE IN THE SHADOWS

Isabella Rossi didn't hesitate.

She brought the heavy iron pipe down with devastating force, striking Paula directly across the back of her gun hand.

Paula screamed, the weapon clattering to the wooden pier.

Isabella didn't stop. She grabbed Paula by the collar of her expensive coat and shoved her violently backward. Paula tripped over a coiled mooring rope and crashed hard onto the frozen planks, gasping for air.

I didn't wait to see if Paula would get back up.

I lunged forward, dropping my gun and dropping to my knees.

I snatched Renee off the ground, pulling her tiny, shaking body tightly into my chest.

“I’ve got you,” I choked out, burying my face in her dark curls. “I’ve got you, princess. You’re safe.”

Renee wrapped her arms around my neck, sobbing hysterically.

“Daddy, I was so scared! The bad lady was gonna hurt me!”

“She’s never going to hurt you again,” I swore, rocking her gently.

I looked up.

Isabella Rossi stood ten feet away, breathing heavily, the iron pipe still clutched in her hands.

She looked nothing like the polished mafia princess from the old photographs. She looked starved, exhausted, and bruised.

But her eyes were fixed entirely on Renee.

The helicopter landed on the far end of the pier.

Vincent Rossi scrambled out, ignoring the spinning rotors, and sprinted toward us.

When he saw Isabella, he stopped dead.

The old mafia boss, a man who had ordered executions without blinking, fell to his knees on the freezing wood.

“Isabella,” Vincent wept, holding his hands out to his daughter. “My beautiful girl. You’re alive.”

Isabella dropped the pipe.

She ran to her father, collapsing into his arms.

For a long moment, the abandoned pier was silent except for the sound of the wind, the water, and the broken sobs of a reunited family.

I stood up, holding Renee securely against my hip.

I walked over to where Paula was groaning on the ground, holding her shattered wrist.

I looked down at the woman I had grown up with. The sister I had protected.

She looked up at me, her face pale and terrified.

“Michael, please,” Paula begged, blood dripping from a cut on her forehead. “I’m your blood. You can't kill me.”

“You lost the right to call yourself my blood the day you murdered Leo,” I said coldly.

Marcus and a team of my heavily armed men suddenly swarmed the pier, having tracked my location from the estate.

“Take her,” I ordered Marcus, not taking my eyes off Paula. “Lock her in the underground cells at the warehouse. Make sure she doesn't see the light of day until I decide how to handle her.”

Paula screamed as Marcus dragged her away, but I didn't feel a shred of pity.

I turned back to Isabella and Vincent.

Isabella gently pulled away from her father and walked slowly toward me.

She looked at Renee, her eyes filled with a desperate, heartbreaking hunger.

“She’s so beautiful,” Isabella whispered, tears tracking through the dirt on her cheeks.

Renee hid her face in my shoulder, intimidated by the stranger.

“It’s okay, sweetheart,” I murmured, rubbing her back.

I looked at Isabella.

“Vincent said you were dead. He found Leo’s watch covered in blood.”

Isabella nodded, shivering in the freezing wind.

“Paula’s men ambushed me at the rendezvous point yesterday. I managed to fight them off, but I was badly hurt. I dropped the watch. I’ve been hiding in these abandoned warehouses, waiting for a chance to get to the estate.”

She looked into my eyes.

“I came back for my daughter, Michael.”

The words hit me like a physical blow.

I tightened my grip on Renee.

I had spent four years raising this little girl. She was my heart. My soul. The only good thing in my dark, violent life.

“She is my daughter,” I said, my voice hardening defensively.

Isabella didn't argue. She didn't yell.

She just looked at me with profound sadness.

“You protected her, Michael. You loved her when my own family thought she was dead, and your family wanted her gone. I will owe you my life for that.”

She took a shaky breath.

“But I am her mother. I missed her first steps. I missed her first words. I won't miss the rest of her life.”

Vincent stepped forward, placing a hand on his daughter’s shoulder.

He looked at me, no longer a rival boss, but a grandfather.

“We don't have to fight anymore, Michael,” Vincent said quietly. “The war between our families started because of lies and greed. It ends today. Let us be a family.”

I looked at Renee.

I looked at Isabella.

I knew what a bloody custody war between two mafia syndicates would do to a six-year-old girl. It would destroy her.

I took a deep breath.

“We aren't fighting,” I said slowly. “But Renee doesn't know you. You can't just walk in and take her away. It will terrify her.”

“Then what do we do?” Isabella asked desperately.

“You come home with us,” I said.

Isabella blinked in shock. “To the DeLuca estate?”

“Paula is gone. My parents will be permanently removed by morning,” I said, making the decision instantly. “The house is safe. You will stay in the guest wing. You will get to know your daughter, and she will get to know you. On her terms.”

Isabella covered her mouth, sobbing with relief.

“Thank you, Michael. Thank you.”

We walked back toward the helicopter, a strange, unprecedented truce formed in the freezing Chicago night.

But as we approached the chopper, my phone buzzed violently in my pocket.

I pulled it out.

It was Maria, the housekeeper.

“Maria, are you okay?” I asked, relieved she was awake.

“Mr. DeLuca,” Maria gasped, her voice weak and terrified. “It’s your parents. They didn't leave.”

My blood ran cold.

“What do you mean they didn't leave?”

“They came back up to the house after Paula took Renee,” Maria cried. “They went into your private study. They opened the floor safe, Michael. They took the black ledger.”

I stopped dead in my tracks.

The black ledger.

The book that contained the identities, accounts, and locations of every corrupt politician, judge, and police chief on the DeLuca payroll.

The absolute foundation of my empire.

“Where are they now?” I demanded, panic surging for the first time all night.

“They left a message for you,” Maria sobbed. “Your father said... he said if you don't surrender the entire DeLuca syndicate to him by morning, he’s giving the ledger to the FBI.”
