Chapter 7 - THE SECRET INSIDE THE BEAR

The silence in the grand foyer was absolute.
Even Nico, groaning in pain against the balustrade, went completely still.
Matteo stared at his daughter’s small hands. “A trick?” he whispered, forgetting to sign.
Isla nodded eagerly.
Mommy knew the bad man was watching her, Isla signed. She bought the wooden cabinet and made a big show of locking it. But she told me never to look inside.
Matteo’s hands were trembling so badly he could barely form the words. Then what is the key for, baby? Where are the real papers?
Isla pointed up the grand staircase.
In my bedroom. Sewn inside Mr. Barnaby.
My jaw dropped.
Mr. Barnaby was a giant, ratty, brown stuffed bear that sat in the corner of Isla’s bedroom. She had refused to let anyone throw it away for years, even when Meredith called it a “disgusting eyesore.”
Matteo didn’t wait another second.
He surged to his feet, scooped Isla into his arms, and sprinted up the stairs, leaping over Daniel’s unconscious body. I ran right behind them.
We burst back into Isla’s bedroom.
Matteo set her down. Isla ran straight to the corner and dragged the heavy, floppy brown bear onto her rug.
She took the gold key and slid it into a tiny, almost invisible metal zipper hidden beneath the bear’s fur collar.
The lock clicked.
She unzipped the back of the bear and reached deep into the stuffing.
When she pulled her hand out, she was holding a thick, vacuum-sealed plastic bag.
Matteo fell to his knees. He took the bag and ripped it open.
Inside were dozens of bank statements, offshore account numbers, and wire transfer receipts. But on top of the pile was something even more damning.
A handwritten confession from a Cayman Islands banker, signed and notarized, detailing exactly how Daniel Mercer had been funneling millions out of Isla’s trust fund for a decade.
And pinned to the confession was a handwritten note from Olivia.
Matteo. If you are reading this, Daniel Mercer found out I know. Protect our daughter. I love you both. Forever.
Matteo pressed the note to his chest and began to sob. Deep, agonizing tears of relief and closure.
I knelt beside Isla and wrapped my arms around her.
Downstairs, the wail of police sirens pierced the night, growing louder and louder until the mansion was bathed in flashing red and blue lights.
It was over.
Ten minutes later, the foyer was swarming with police.
Paramedics were loading Nico onto a stretcher. He gave Matteo a weak smile and a thumbs-up as they wheeled him out.
Daniel Mercer was handcuffed and dragged out by two massive officers. He was awake now, bleeding from his head, his face twisted in absolute defeat as an investigator held up the vacuum-sealed bag of evidence.
Meredith was arrested next. She wept hysterically as they read her rights for forgery and conspiracy to commit fraud. She looked back at Matteo, begging for mercy, but he didn’t even glance in her direction.
When the police finally cleared out, the mansion felt peaceful for the first time since I had started working there.
Matteo sat on the bottom step of the staircase, holding Isla in his lap.
He looked at me standing awkwardly by the door.
“Hannah,” he said softly. “Come here.”
I walked over.
“You didn’t just translate for my daughter tonight,” Matteo said, his voice thick with emotion. “You stood between her and a monster. You risked everything.”
I swallowed hard. “She’s family to me, sir.”
“I know,” Matteo said. He reached out and gently squeezed my hand. “You aren’t a maid anymore, Hannah. I want you to stay as Isla’s private tutor and advocate. And I’ll be paying off the rest of your mother’s hospital bills tomorrow. That’s a promise.”
Tears spilled from my eyes. I couldn’t even speak.
Isla reached into her pocket. She pulled out the tiny silver butterfly she had taken from the dining table.
She handed it to her father.
For protecting Mommy’s house, she signed.
Matteo smiled, taking the butterfly and sliding it into the buttonhole of his ruined suit jacket.
We are safe now, Isla signed, resting her head against his chest.
Yes, baby, Matteo signed back, kissing her hair. We are finally safe.
But as I watched them, my phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out.

It was a text message from an unknown number.
Daniel Mercer was just the accountant. Check the ledger.
