Chapter 4 - THE BRACELET IN THE BOX

The chandelier lights seemed to flicker. The room spun around me.

“What did you just say?” I whispered, stepping forward.

Anthony looked from the silver bracelet to me. “Margaret Carter. This was your mother’s name?”

“Yes.” My voice trembled. “She died when I was twelve.”

Victoria let out a sharp, mocking laugh, though her hands were shaking. “This is ridiculous. Isabella is playing games from the grave! Why would some maid’s mother have anything to do with my pregnancy?”

Aunt Rosa walked slowly into the dining room, the guards trailing behind her.

“Because Margaret wasn’t just a maid,” Rosa said, her voice cutting through the tension. “She was a nurse at St. Jude’s Fertility Clinic.”

I stared at the old woman. My mother had worked at a clinic before she got sick. But she never talked about her patients.

Anthony held up the cassette tape from the music box.

“Get me a player,” he ordered.

Within minutes, one of the guards brought an old tape recorder from the study. Anthony slid the cassette in and pressed play.

Static hissed through the grand dining room.

Then, Isabella’s voice filled the air.

“Anthony. If you are hearing this, it means I didn’t survive the drive. I couldn't tell you the truth to your face. I was too ashamed.”

Noah grabbed his father’s sleeve. Hearing his mother’s voice after eight years broke something inside him. Anthony pulled his son close, his own eyes shining with tears.

“Victoria forged her medical clearance,” Isabella’s voice continued. “She wanted the surrogacy money to pay off Arthur’s gambling debts. But she couldn’t carry our child. The clinic rejected her.”

Victoria folded her arms, her jaw tight. “I was pregnant! You all saw my stomach grow!”

Isabella’s recorded voice seemed to answer her directly.

“Victoria got pregnant on her own, Anthony. With her ex-boyfriend. She used her own pregnancy to trick us into thinking she was carrying our embryo.”

The guests gasped.

Arthur closed his eyes, leaning against the wall in defeat.

“But our embryo was viable,” Isabella’s voice trembled with tears. “A nurse at the clinic discovered Victoria’s forgery. The nurse knew we were desperate. She knew the clinic was going to destroy our embryo because of the scandal.”

I felt my knees go weak. I gripped the back of a chair to stay standing.

“The nurse’s name was Margaret Carter. She was a widow with a young daughter. She needed money for medical treatments. So… we made a secret arrangement.”

Tears streamed down my face.

“Margaret carried Noah,” Isabella confessed. “We hid her in a private apartment in the city while Victoria lived at the estate, pretending to carry our child. When the time came, Margaret delivered Noah in secret. We paid her, and she gave him to us. We faked the adoption papers with Victoria to keep the scandal from ruining your reputation, Anthony.”

The tape clicked, and the room went completely silent.

Noah looked at me. His eyes were wide, filled with an emotion I couldn't name.

“Your mom…” Noah whispered. “Your mom had me?”

I couldn’t speak. The timeline made terrifying sense. My mother had disappeared for almost a year when I was fourteen, claiming she was at an out-of-state medical facility for treatments. She came back exhausted, but with enough money to pay off our house.

Anthony stared at me. The realization hitting him with the force of a freight train.

“You’re her daughter,” Anthony said softly. “Isabella hired you. She found you after Margaret died and brought you here.”

“I… I didn’t know,” I stammered, wiping my tears. “I just applied for a job. The agency sent me here.”

“Isabella specifically requested you,” Aunt Rosa confirmed quietly. “She wanted to make sure you were taken care of.”

“This is a lie!” Victoria shouted, her composure completely shattering. “I gave birth to that boy! I signed the papers! That tape is a fake!”

Anthony pressed a button on the tape player.

“Victoria found out,” Isabella’s voice returned, darker this time. “She found out about Margaret. She threatened to expose the whole thing to the press. To ruin you, Anthony. To ruin Margaret. So, I paid her. I paid her every month for years.”

Anthony’s fists clenched.

“But yesterday,” Isabella said, her voice dropping to a terrified whisper, “Victoria demanded more. She demanded the estate. And when I said no… she said she would take Noah away from me. Permanently.”

Noah sobbed, burying his face in his father’s chest.

“The mechanic just called. He told me he cut the brakes on the SUV. The one Noah takes to camp. I’m taking the car instead, Anthony. I have to destroy the blackmail evidence in the city before she uses it against you. If I don't make it... protect our son.”

The tape ended.

Victoria backed away, shaking her head. “No. No, it wasn’t like that.”

Anthony handed the cassette to his head of security.

“Give this to the police when they arrive.”

Then, he turned to Victoria.

But before he could speak, the dining room doors burst open.

Two police officers walked in.

But they weren't looking at Victoria.

The lead officer looked directly at me.

“Emily Carter? You’re under arrest for the theft of Victoria Hale’s engagement ring.”
