Chapter 12 - THE NEW QUEEN

Six months later.

The Romano mansion had been completely restored, the scars of the explosion erased by master craftsmen and fresh white paint. The crystal chandeliers gleamed brightly in the afternoon sun, casting rainbows across the polished marble floors of the grand foyer.

Grace stood in front of a full-length mirror in the master suite.

She was no longer wearing a white maid’s apron or a simple gray sweater.

She wore a breathtaking, custom-made ivory silk gown. The bodice was embroidered with delicate lace, and the long train pooled elegantly around her feet. A single, flawless diamond rested against her collarbone on a delicate silver chain—a gift from Dante to replace the heavy cross she had thrown into the fire.

The bedroom door opened, and a tiny tornado of white tulle burst into the room.

“Grace! You look like a princess!”

Lucy spun in a circle, her flower girl dress puffing out around her knees. She ran over and hugged Grace around the waist, careful not to wrinkle the silk.

Grace smiled, brushing a stray curl from the little girl’s face. “And you look like a queen, my beautiful girl. Are you ready for your big job?”

Lucy nodded enthusiastically, holding up a small velvet pillow. Resting in the center were two simple, elegant gold wedding bands.

“I’m ready,” Lucy beamed. “Daddy is waiting downstairs. He keeps checking his watch. He looks nervous.”

Grace laughed softly. The idea of the fearsome Mafia Boss being nervous about walking down the aisle was incredibly endearing.

“Then we shouldn’t keep him waiting,” Grace said.

She took a deep breath, the magnitude of the moment washing over her. Six months ago, she had been a terrified, stuttering maid, terrified of her own shadow. Today, she was stepping into the light, claiming her place beside the man who had shown her that her voice mattered.

The adoption papers had been finalized weeks ago. Lucy was officially her daughter. And today, Dante would officially be her husband.

Grace took Lucy’s hand, and together, they walked down the grand staircase.

The sprawling back gardens of the estate had been transformed into a floral paradise. Hundreds of white roses lined the aisle, and soft string music floated through the warm spring air.

There were no rival bosses in attendance. There were no politicians to impress or enemies to intimidate.

The guests were only the people who truly mattered: Dante’s fiercely loyal men, Grace’s younger sister, who was thriving under the best medical care money could buy, and the household staff, who sat in the front rows, weeping tears of joy for the girl they had always loved.

As Grace stepped out onto the terrace, the music swelled.

At the end of the aisle stood Dante.

He wore a custom black tuxedo that fit his broad shoulders perfectly. His dark hair was swept back, and the harsh, dangerous lines of his face were completely softened by the sheer emotion in his eyes.

When he saw Grace, the breath physically left his lungs.

He didn’t look at the silk dress or the diamond necklace. He looked at her face. He looked at the confident, radiant woman who had walked into the darkest corners of his life and filled them with light.

Lucy walked down the aisle first, proudly carrying the rings, smiling at the guards who gave her small, respectful bows as she passed.

Then, Grace began her walk.

Every step felt like a victory. She walked past the spot where Bianca had humiliated her. She walked past the terrace where Silvio had tried to destroy them. She left the ghosts of the past behind, moving steadily toward her future.

When she reached the altar, Dante stepped forward and took both of her hands in his. His thumbs gently stroked her knuckles, grounding her.

“You’re beautiful,” Dante whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

“You don’t look too bad yourself, Mr. Romano,” Grace whispered back, a teasing smile touching her lips.

The priest began the ceremony, speaking of love, resilience, and the bonds of family that can never be broken.

When it came time for the vows, Dante didn’t read from a card. He looked directly into Grace’s eyes.

“I spent my life building walls to keep the world out,” Dante said, his deep voice carrying clearly across the silent garden. “I thought strength meant standing alone. But you showed me that true strength is having the courage to protect the people you love, even when you are terrified. You saved my daughter. You saved my soul. And I vow to spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to be afraid again.”

Tears spilled over Grace’s eyelashes, but she didn’t wipe them away.

She took a breath, finding her voice easily, without a single hesitation.

“I spent my life hiding in the shadows,” Grace said, her voice ringing clear and true. “I let my past dictate my worth. But you saw me, Dante. You didn’t see a maid, or a victim. You saw an equal. You gave me a family, a voice, and a home. And I promise to stand by your side, through every storm, as your partner, your wife, and your equal, for as long as I live.”

Lucy handed them the rings.

Dante slid the gold band onto Grace’s finger, and she did the same for him.

“I now pronounce you husband and wife,” the priest smiled. “You may kiss the bride.”

Dante didn’t hesitate. He pulled Grace into his arms, kissing her with a fierce, possessive, and infinitely tender love that took her breath away.

The garden erupted into cheers and applause.

When they finally broke apart, Dante rested his forehead against hers, a brilliant smile lighting up his face. He reached down and scooped Lucy up with his free arm, holding his daughter on his hip while keeping Grace pulled tightly against his side.

They turned to face their family.

Grace looked out at the cheering crowd, feeling the warm sun on her face and the solid, unwavering strength of her husband beside her.

She wasn’t the stuttering maid anymore.

She was Grace Romano. The Queen of the empire, the mother to a beautiful little girl, and the woman who had conquered the darkness to claim her happily ever after.
