Chapter 10 - THE FINAL HEIRLOOM'S SECRET

I froze, the envelope of money heavy in my hands.

“What is it, Mrs. Moretti?” I asked softly.

The elderly woman wheeled Aunt Rosa closer to the hospital bed. She opened her leather clasp purse. Her hands were shaking slightly, but she looked entirely lucid. The confusion and fear that had plagued her all evening were completely gone.

“When Bianca locked Rosa in that basement ten years ago, she didn't just take her freedom,” Mrs. Moretti said. “She took the family archives. Everything my husband built.”

She pulled out a small, velvet-wrapped object.

“Bianca thought she destroyed all the evidence of her shadow deals,” Mrs. Moretti continued. “But Rosa hid this in the lining of her wheelchair for a decade.”

Mrs. Moretti unwrapped the velvet cloth.

Inside was a tarnished gold locket. It was heavy, beautiful, and completely covered in intricate ivy engravings.

Dominic stepped forward, still holding Mia. He stared at the locket.

“That belonged to my grandfather,” Dominic said, his voice thick with reverence. “He brought it from Italy. It went missing twenty years ago.”

“It didn't go missing,” Aunt Rosa rasped from her wheelchair. “Bianca stole it. Because of what’s inside.”

Mrs. Moretti held the locket out to me.

“Open it, Elena,” she said gently.

I swallowed hard. My hands were trembling as I took the cold gold heirloom from her palm.

I found the small clasp on the side and pressed it.

The locket popped open.

Inside, there was a tiny, perfectly preserved black-and-white photograph.

It was a picture of two young men standing in front of a bakery. One of the men was clearly Dominic’s grandfather, a broad-shouldered Italian immigrant with a fierce smile.

But it was the second man that made my heart completely stop.

He was thinner, with kind eyes and a gentle smile. He wore a baker's apron.

“Mom,” I whispered, completely breathless. I showed the locket to my mother on the hospital bed. “Is that…?”

My mother squinted at the tiny photograph. A soft gasp escaped her lips.

“That’s your grandfather, Elena,” she said, tears instantly pooling in her eyes. “Arthur Parker.”

I looked at Dominic in absolute shock.

“Our families knew each other?” I asked.

Dominic looked just as stunned. He looked at Aunt Rosa for an answer.

Rosa nodded slowly. “Arthur Parker wasn't just a baker. He was your grandfather’s most trusted partner. When the rival families tried to wipe out the Morettis fifty years ago, Arthur hid our entire family in the cellar of his bakery for three weeks.”

“He saved our lives,” Mrs. Moretti added softly.

“When the war ended,” Rosa continued, “Arthur refused to take any of the mafia’s money. He said he just wanted to bake bread. But your grandfather made a vow, Dominic. He swore on his life that if the Parker family ever needed protection, the Morettis would lay down their lives for them.”

I couldn't speak. My chest was tight.

I hadn't just stumbled into the housemaid job by accident.

“Bianca knew,” Rosa whispered. “When Elena’s father died and your family fell into poverty, Bianca intercepted the letters your mother sent asking for help. She buried the truth because she didn't want to share the estate’s wealth. When Elena applied for the job, Bianca hired her just to humiliate her.”

Tears streamed down my face. I looked at my mother, who was softly crying, tracing the face of her father in the tiny photograph.

We weren't just the help. We were tied to this family by blood and loyalty.

Dominic slowly handed Mia to his mother.

He walked over to me. The massive, terrifying mafia boss stopped inches away.

Then, to the absolute shock of everyone in the room, Dominic Moretti bowed his head respectfully.

“Elena Parker,” Dominic said, his voice filled with raw emotion. “Your family saved mine. And tonight, you saved my daughter. The debt is real, and it is eternal.”

He looked up, his dark eyes locking onto mine.

“You are a Moretti now. In every way that matters.”

Before I could even process the weight of his words, the hospital room door slammed open.

A young enforcer from Carlo’s crew burst in, panting heavily.

“Boss!” the kid yelled, his face pale with panic.

Dominic spun around, instantly slipping back into protector mode. “What is it?”

May you like

“It’s Bianca. She’s gone.”
