Chapter 7 - THE FATHER'S LESSON

Luca picked up the leather journal.
It was stamped with his father’s initials: G.M.
He opened it to the first page.
It wasn't a book of accounts or secrets. It was a diary.
Luca read the first entry aloud.
“Today, my son Luca took his first steps. He fell twice. But Teresa just clapped and told him to try again. She is the strength of this family. I must ensure he never forgets that.”
Luca’s voice cracked.
He flipped through the pages. Years of memories, lessons, and observations about his son.
He stopped near the end of the book, dated just weeks before Giovanni’s death.
“Luca is ready to lead. He is strong, smart, and ruthless when he needs to be. But my greatest fear is that the power will blind him to the people who matter most. A true boss doesn't rule with fear; he rules with loyalty. And loyalty is earned by how you treat the most vulnerable people in your house.”
Luca stopped reading.
He stared at the page, the weight of his father’s words settling heavily onto his shoulders.
“He knew,” Luca whispered.
Teresa gently touched his arm.
“He knew you had a good heart, sweetheart,” she said. “He just wanted to make sure you never let anyone convince you to harden it.”
Luca closed the journal.
He looked at his mother.
“I almost let her take you from me,” he said, his voice thick with guilt. “If Hannah hadn't spoken up... if you hadn't fought back... I would have lost you.”
“But you didn't,” Teresa smiled, pointing to her hearing aids. “Because you listened. When it mattered most, you heard me.”
Luca pulled her into a tight, fierce hug.
I stood near the door, watching them, feeling a profound sense of warmth in my chest.
This wasn't a crime syndicate. This was a family. And they had survived the storm.
As Luca pulled back, he noticed something tucked into the very back cover of the leather journal.

He pulled it out.
It was a small, velvet ring box.
