Chapter 9 - The Happy Ending

Vincent didn’t speak as he drove. He didn’t need to. We both knew the Chicago outfit wouldn't just send three men to the docks. It was a distraction.
We burst through the front doors of the mansion. The grand foyer was empty.
"Ma!" Vincent shouted, his gun drawn.
We ran to the library, then the master bedroom. Empty. My heart hammered in my throat. Mia. They had Mia.
We tore through the house toward the kitchen.
I pushed the swinging doors open and stopped dead.
Rosa was sitting at the heavy oak kitchen table, casually drinking a cup of tea. Beside her sat Mia, happily eating a slice of chocolate cake.
And standing at the stove, pouring another cup of tea, was a woman with familiar, tired eyes and flour on her apron.
"Lily," I choked out.
My sister turned. She dropped the teapot. It shattered on the floor, but neither of us cared. I ran across the kitchen and threw my arms around her, burying my face in her shoulder. We collapsed to the floor, holding each other, crying so hard we couldn't breathe.
"How?" I whispered, pulling back to look at her face. "How are you here?"
Lily looked at Rosa. "Mrs. Moretti's security team. When they saw the Chicago men moving toward the house, they didn't wait. They brought me straight here."
Vincent lowered his gun, letting out a breath that sounded like he had been holding it for months.
Rosa smiled, a genuine, warm smile that reached her eyes. "I told you, Claire. I protect my family. And you... you protected me."
That night, for the first time in my life, I wasn't serving the dinner.
I sat at the grand dining table. Lily sat beside me, with Mia on her lap, safe and deeply loved. Rosa sat at the head of the table, her dignity completely restored, her presence commanding the room without a single word.
Vincent sat across from me. He raised his glass of wine.
"To family," he said softly, looking right at me.
"To family," we echoed.
The secrets were out. The poison had been drained from the house. Marco and Vanessa were gone, banished to the lives they deserved. My sister was safe, my niece was home, and the woman I had been hired to care for had turned out to be our greatest protector.

It was perfect.
Until the next morning, when I went to clear out Marco’s old office.
