Chapter 11 - THE LAST THREAD

I pointed the car out to Gabriel.

His eyes darkened. He made a quick phone call.

Within minutes, Matteo's men surrounded the car.

They dragged out a single man—a private investigator.

Gabriel walked out to the street. I stood on the porch, my heart racing.

"Who hired you?" Gabriel demanded.

The investigator coughed. "Cassandra. Before she was taken. She paid me to find the boy and bring him to her overseas accounts."

Gabriel's face was stone. "Cassandra is gone. The accounts are frozen. The boy is mine now."

"Tell her," Gabriel continued, his voice echoing in the quiet street, "if she ever looks for him again, I won't send the Commission. I'll come myself."

The investigator nodded frantically and sped away.

Gabriel walked back up the porch steps.

"Is it over?" I asked.

"It's over," he promised.

The next morning, I was in the kitchen making pancakes.

Lily and Leo were sitting at the table, laughing over a cartoon.

Lily dropped her fork. "Mom, can you pass the syrup?"

The kitchen went dead silent.
