Chapter 2 - The Man With The Silver Necklace

The dining room went dead silent.

Vanessa’s father, a powerful man who rarely showed emotion, dropped his fork onto his china plate. The sharp clink echoed like a gunshot.

“What are you talking about?” Luca asked, his voice dropping to a dangerous, quiet register.

He didn’t look at Vanessa. He looked directly at the Italian businessman.

“Marco,” Luca said. “Explain yourself.”

I gasped softly. Marco. I had heard Isabella mention an Uncle Marco, Elena’s estranged older brother. He had been banished from the family business years ago.

“Elena didn’t die in that crash, Luca,” Marco said, standing up. “The casket you buried was empty.”

Vanessa lunged forward, her red silk gown rustling wildly. “Security! Get this man out of my house!”

Two men in dark suits stepped from the shadows, but Luca raised a single hand.

They froze.

“Let him speak,” Luca commanded.

Marco walked slowly toward the head of the table. He reached into his tailored suit jacket and pulled out a small velvet pouch.

“Elena called me the night she disappeared,” Marco said. “She told me Vanessa’s family had threatened Isabella. They wanted a merger with your empire, Luca. And Elena was in the way.”

“Lies!” Vanessa screamed.

Marco ignored her. He opened the pouch and tipped it upside down.

A heavy silver necklace fell onto the white tablecloth.

It was a delicate chain with a pendant shaped like a swallow. I had seen Isabella holding a drawing of that exact bird just days ago.

Luca stared at the necklace. The color drained from his face.

“I gave this to Elena on our fifth anniversary,” Luca whispered. “She never took it off. She was wearing it the night she drove away.”

“She gave it to me three days after the funeral,” Marco said. “When I came to this house in the middle of the night to collect her from the basement.”

I looked down at Isabella.

The little girl was trembling, hiding her face in my apron.

“Isabella saw me,” Marco said gently, looking at his niece. “She saw me carry her mother out the back door.”

Luca slowly turned toward his fiancée.

Vanessa was backing away from the table, her hands shaking. “Darling, he’s insane. He’s trying to extort you.”

“Then why,” Luca asked, his voice breaking, “is there fresh blood on this pendant?”

He picked up the silver swallow. The underside was stained with a dark, rusted red.

Marco closed his eyes. “Because whoever took her from my safehouse yesterday wasn’t gentle.”

Luca’s head snapped up. “She’s missing again?”

Before Marco could answer, Isabella tugged violently on my pocket.

She pointed a shaking finger not at Vanessa, but at Vanessa’s father, who was quietly wiping his mouth with a napkin.

Isabella whispered four words in Italian.

My heart stopped.

Luca looked at me, his eyes burning with panic. “Emily. What did she say?”

I swallowed hard, looking at the patriarch of the Bellini family.

“She says... he’s wearing Mommy’s watch.”
