Chapter 7 - THE DROP

“Emily, wait!” Luca roared, but I was already moving.

I didn't think. I scrambled down the steep metal staircase of the catwalk, my shoes slipping on the wet steel. Bullets sparked against the railing as Marco fired wildly from behind the forklift, but his aim was rushed.

Above me, the deafening screech of unspooling chains filled the warehouse. The ten-ton shipping container was descending, casting a massive, terrifying shadow over the wooden crate where Sophia sat paralyzed, clutching her pink blanket.

“Sophia! Jump!” I screamed, hitting the concrete floor and sprinting toward her.

She was too terrified to move. She just squeezed her eyes shut and wailed.

Ten feet. Eight feet.

I dove forward, my arms wrapping around her tiny body. I used my momentum to tackle us both off the crate, rolling across the oil-slicked concrete.

SMASH.

The shipping container slammed into the floor with the force of an earthquake. The concrete buckled, sending a shockwave that rattled my teeth. Wood splintered into a million pieces where Sophia had been sitting a fraction of a second before.

Dust and debris exploded outward in a thick, choking cloud.

I lay on my back, coughing, clutching Sophia to my chest. She was trembling violently but unharmed.

“I got you, baby. I got you,” I whispered, kissing the top of her head.

Through the settling dust, a shadow emerged.

It was Marco. His expensive coat was covered in concrete dust, his face twisted in absolute fury. He marched toward us, raising his silver pistol, aiming it directly at my face.

“You ruin everything, you stupid little maid,” he snarled.

He pulled the trigger.

Click.

His gun was empty.

Before he could reload, a dark blur tackled him from the side. Luca slammed into his uncle with the force of a freight train.

The two men crashed into a stack of oil drums. Marco was older, but he fought with the desperate ferocity of a cornered rat. He swung a heavy metal wrench, catching Luca across the temple. Luca stumbled back, blood pouring down his face, but he didn't fall.

Luca delivered a punishing blow to Marco’s ribs, then another to his jaw. Marco collapsed, gasping for air, spitting blood onto the concrete.

Luca stood over him, chest heaving, his fists clenched. He pulled his handgun from his holster and pointed it at the man who had raised him.

“You stole my father’s money. You tried to destroy my brother. You kidnapped my niece,” Luca said, his voice shaking with a rage so profound it commanded the entire room. “Give me one reason why I shouldn’t end you right now.”

Marco laughed, a wet, ragged sound. “Because you’re a businessman, Luca. Just like me. Kill me, and the feds will tear this family apart looking for the money. Keep me alive, and I’ll give you the account numbers.”

A reversal. Marco still thought he had leverage.

Suddenly, the warehouse doors blew open with a blinding flash of red and blue lights. Sirens pierced the night.

Dozens of armed FBI agents swarmed into the building, assault rifles raised.

“FBI! Drop your weapons! Get on the ground!”

Luca slowly lowered his gun and placed it on the floor, raising his hands.

Agents moved in, slapping cuffs on Dominic Bellini, who was still bleeding by the control panel. They dragged Enzo down from the catwalk. Two agents hauled Marco to his feet, securing his wrists behind his back.

Marco looked at Luca, a bloody smirk on his face. “I’m a lawyer, Luca. I know how to talk to these people. By tomorrow morning, Dominic and Michael will take the fall, and I’ll be sipping espresso in my townhouse.”

“I don't think so,” a clear, authoritative voice echoed across the warehouse floor.

A tall man in a trench coat stepped through the FBI agents. He flashed a badge.

“Special Agent Harrison. Organized Crime Division.”

Marco’s smirk vanished. “I demand my phone call.”

“You’ll get it,” Harrison said coldly. “But you might want to call a good defense attorney. Because we just received a very interesting audio recording.”

Marco’s face drained of color. “What recording?”

Agent Harrison pulled out his phone and pressed play.

Over the phone speaker, Marco’s harsh Neapolitan voice filled the air:“Dominic is going to take the fall. I’m leaving the country tonight. I’m taking the stolen money. And I’m leaving Sophia here with Dominic…”

Marco stared in absolute horror. “How… how did you get that?”

Luca walked over, wiping the blood from his brow. He looked down at his uncle with ice-cold satisfaction.

“When Emily was translating your phone call to me on the catwalk,” Luca said quietly, “she wasn't just whispering in my ear. I had my phone on speaker. Connected to Enzo’s open line.”

Luca pointed to the unconscious Enzo being dragged out.

“Enzo dropped his phone when I broke his arm. But the line was still open. To Michael. Who was sitting in the panic room at the estate. With the FBI on the other line.”

I stared at Luca in shock. He had orchestrated the entire confession while pretending to be held hostage.

“You’re finished, Marco,” Luca said. “Your accounts are frozen. Your assets are seized. And you will spend the rest of your miserable life in a federal penitentiary.”

Marco began to scream curses in Italian as the agents dragged him away.

The warehouse fell quiet, save for the crackle of police radios.

Agent Harrison approached Luca. “Paramedics are outside for you and the child. Your brother is on his way.”

Luca nodded. He turned to me.

I was still sitting on the floor, holding Sophia. My uniform was torn, covered in oil, concrete dust, and dried wine. I was shaking from the adrenaline leaving my body.

Luca dropped to his knees in front of me. He didn't care about the dirt or the police watching. He reached out and gently cupped my dirt-streaked face in his large, warm hands.

“You saved her, Emily,” he whispered, his dark eyes filled with overwhelming emotion. “You saved my family.”

Before I could answer, headlights swept across the warehouse floor. A black SUV slammed on its brakes, and the doors flew open.

“Sophia!”

Michael and Anna sprinted into the warehouse, crying hysterically.

I stood up, holding Sophia out. Anna collapsed to her knees, burying her face in her daughter’s neck, sobbing with a relief so pure it broke my heart. Michael wrapped his arms around both of them, burying his face in Anna’s shoulder.

“Thank you,” Michael choked out, looking up at me through his tears. “Emily, thank you. I owe you my life.”

I smiled, wiping my own tears.

Suddenly, a sharp, manic voice echoed from the entrance.

“Don't you dare thank that little tramp!”

We all turned.

Vanessa Bellini was standing in the doorway, her red satin gown soaked from the rain. But she wasn't looking at me.

She was holding a gun, and it was pointed directly at Anna.
