Chapter 5 - THE MAN IN THE ALLEY

Plaster rained down on my hair as I hit the floor.

The deafening roar of gunfire tore through our tiny apartment, shredding the walls and shattering the cheap picture frames.

Luca’s heavy body covered mine, shielding me from the flying debris. I could smell his cologne, mixed with the acrid scent of gunpowder and dust.

“Stay down!” he roared over the noise.

The shooting stopped abruptly. The silence that followed was heavy and terrifying, broken only by the sound of car doors slamming on the street below. Heavy boots pounded on the pavement.

“They’re coming up,” Luca said, his voice terrifyingly calm. He rolled off me, his gun already drawn and aimed at the splintered doorway. “How many fire escapes does this building have?”

“Just one,” I stammered, pointing toward the shattered kitchen window. “In the back. It leads to the alley.”

“Go. Now.”

“I’m not leaving you!”

Luca grabbed my shoulders, pulling me to my feet. His eyes were fierce, burning with a protective intensity that took my breath away. “They aren’t here for me, Emily. They’re here for that key and that drawing. You have the truth now. Protect it. I will be right behind you.”

Footsteps thundered on the stairs. Second floor.

I didn’t argue. I scrambled through the kitchen debris, clutching the child’s drawing and the silver key tightly in my pocket. I threw my leg over the window sill and dropped onto the rusted iron fire escape.

Cold night air whipped across my face. I scrambled down the metal stairs, my cheap maid’s shoes slipping on the wet iron.

Above me, gunfire erupted inside my apartment.

“Luca!” I screamed, freezing on the ladder.

“Keep moving!” his voice roared from the window above.

I hit the alley floor, gasping for breath. The narrow space was dark, filled with overflowing dumpsters and the smell of rotting food. I ran toward the street, praying to see Dante and the Moretti security team.

Instead, a massive figure stepped out from the shadows, blocking my path.

He was wearing a long, dark overcoat. Silver hair slicked back. In his right hand, he held a suppressed pistol.

Carlo Bellini.

“Hello, little bird,” Vanessa’s father said smoothly. His voice was like grinding glass. “You’ve caused quite a mess tonight.”

I backed away, my heart hammering in my throat. “Where is my mother?”

Carlo chuckled, taking a slow step toward me. “Oh, she’s resourceful, that one. Slipped right through my fingers. But it doesn’t matter. She left without the prize.” He held out his free hand. “Give me the key, Emily. And the drawing.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Don’t play stupid,” Carlo sneered. “Fifteen years I’ve looked for that safe deposit key. Marcus Moretti was a fool. He loved a maid instead of his own wife. He trusted your mother with everything. Give me the key, and I’ll let you walk away.”

“You killed Luca’s father!” I shouted, anger momentarily overriding my terror. “I know the truth!”

Carlo tilted his head. “The truth? The truth is what I say it is. Marcus was soft. He wanted to legitimize the families. Go corporate. He was destroying our way of life.”

He raised his gun, aiming it directly at my chest.

“Vanessa was supposed to keep you docile until we found the key. But my daughter is an idiot who let her jealousy get the better of her. Now, hand it over, or you die right here.”

I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing for the gunshot.

BANG.

But the pain never came.

Carlo screamed. The gun dropped from his hand, clattering against the wet pavement.

I opened my eyes. Carlo was clutching his shattered shoulder, falling to his knees.

Standing at the end of the alley, his gun still smoking, was Luca. His suit jacket was ruined, his white shirt stained with blood from a cut on his cheek, but his posture was absolute granite.

Behind him, four Moretti SUVs swarmed the street. Armed men poured out, surrounding the alley in seconds. Dante rushed forward, kicking Carlo’s dropped gun away and pressing a boot hard into the old man’s back, pinning him to the ground.

Luca walked slowly toward us. He didn’t look at Carlo. He looked only at me.

“Are you hurt?” he asked, his voice rough.

“No,” I choked out, tears finally spilling down my face. “You saved me.”

Luca reached out, gently wiping a tear from my cheek with his thumb. “I will always protect you, Emily. No one touches you. Ever.”

Carlo coughed on the ground, spitting blood onto the asphalt. “You think you’ve won, Luca? You think having the girl changes anything? You don’t even know what’s inside that safe deposit box.”

Luca looked down at the bleeding man in disgust. “I’m going to find out. Take him to the warehouse,” Luca ordered Dante. “If he bleeds out on the way, make sure it hurts.”

Luca took my hand, his grip warm and solid. “Come on. We’re going to the bank.”

As he led me toward his SUV, I reached up and touched the silver locket around my neck. My mother wasn’t just a maid. She was the keeper of a mafia empire’s greatest secret.

And as I looked at the fierce, protective man holding my hand, I realized something else.

I wasn’t just a maid anymore, either.
