Chapter 12 - THE ASHES OF THE EMPIRE

The fire in the barrel quickly died down, taking centuries of corrupt mafia history with it.
Luca stood watching the smoke curl into the morning sky. He looked lighter, as if a physical weight had been lifted from his broad shoulders.
My father watched him in stunned silence.
“You really did it,” Arthur murmured.
“It’s done,” Luca confirmed. He turned to Marco. “Call the FBI. Give them Vance. Tell them everything they need to lock him away for domestic terrorism. We are clean.”
“Yes, Boss,” Marco smiled, tapping his earpiece.
Luca walked back over to me.
He didn't care that my father was standing right there. He reached out and gently cupped my face, his thumb wiping a tear from my cheek.
“Let’s go home,” Luca said softly.
We drove back to the estate in the bright light of mid-morning.
The mansion didn't feel like a fortress anymore. It felt open, warm, and alive.
My mother and Katie were waiting in the grand foyer. When my mother saw my father walk through the door, she fainted dead away.
The reunion that followed was chaotic, loud, and filled with more tears than I had cried in my entire life.
My family was whole again.
Later that evening, the estate was quiet.
The staff had been given the week off with double pay. The security team was relaxed, grilling steaks on the back terrace.
I was sitting in Luca’s study, looking out the large bay windows at the sprawling gardens.
I wasn't wearing my black housemaid's uniform. I was wearing a simple, comfortable dress. I didn't have to clean another floor as long as I lived.
Luca walked into the study, holding two glasses of wine.
He handed one to me and sat on the edge of the mahogany desk.
“The news just broke,” Luca said, taking a sip of his wine. “Senator Vance was arrested. The scandal is tearing the state apart. The Five Families are scrambling, but without the charter, they have no central authority. They will tear each other apart while we sit safely on the sidelines.”
I smiled, feeling a profound sense of peace.
“You really walked away from it all.”
“I walked toward something better,” Luca corrected, setting his glass down.
He stood up and walked over to me.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.
My heart did a sudden, frantic flip.
Luca opened the box.
Inside wasn't a massive, gaudy mafia diamond. It was a simple, elegant vintage ring with a beautiful sapphire center stone.
“This belonged to my grandmother,” Luca said softly, his dark eyes entirely vulnerable. “She wore it when she and my grandfather were just immigrants starting a bakery in Chicago. Before the money, before the violence. It represents a good, honest life.”
He knelt down on one knee in front of me.
“I want a good, honest life, Emma. But I only want it with you.”
Tears immediately sprang to my eyes.
“Luca...”
“You stood up to the men who tried to break me. You protected my nephew. You saved my life,” Luca said, his voice thick with emotion. “I don't want you to be a maid. I don't want you to be collateral. I want you to be my wife.”
I didn't hesitate. I didn't have to think.
I threw my arms around his neck, pulling him into a desperate, passionate kiss.
“Yes,” I whispered against his lips. “Yes, absolutely.”
Luca laughed, a deep, joyous sound that echoed through the study. He slipped the sapphire ring onto my finger. It fit perfectly.
He picked me up, spinning me around as I laughed through my tears.
We walked out onto the terrace together, his arm securely around my waist.
My family was sitting around the fire pit with little Leo, roasting marshmallows and laughing loudly.
It was a picture of pure, uncomplicated happiness.
The mafia boss who had ruled Chicago with an iron fist had traded his empire for a family.
And the maid who had scrubbed his floors had become the queen of his heart.

We had survived the darkness, and now, we were finally stepping into the light.
