Chapter 9 - THE SUNRISE

My phone slipped from my fingers, shattering against the marble floor of the bank lobby.

“Claire? What is it?” Gabriel demanded, seeing my face drain of blood.

“Leo,” I choked out. “My mother. Someone is still out there.”

Gabriel didn’t ask questions. He grabbed my arm and we sprinted to the waiting SUV.

“To the clinic! Now!” Gabriel roared at the driver.

We tore through the early morning streets of New York. My heart beat so fast it hurt. If they hurt my son, if they hurt my mother…

We skidded to a halt in front of the private clinic.

Gabriel and his men flooded the lobby, bypassing the terrified receptionists. We ran up the stairs to the fourth floor, bursting through the double doors of the oncology ward.

I ran to Room 412 and pushed the door open.

The bed was empty.

I screamed.

Gabriel stood behind me, his gun drawn, his eyes scanning the room.

“Look,” Gabriel said sharply.

Sitting in the armchair by the window was Margaret.

She was holding Leo in her lap. Leo was fast asleep, perfectly safe.

And lying in the hospital bed, looking pale but awake, was a woman with kind eyes and short, thinning hair.

My mother. Sarah.

“Mom!” I cried, rushing to the bed and throwing my arms carefully around her.

She hugged me back, tears streaming down her face. “Oh, Claire. My brave girl.”

Gabriel slowly lowered his weapon. He walked into the room, staring at the woman who shared his father’s eyes.

Sarah looked at him. “Gabriel.”

“You know who I am?” Gabriel asked softly.

Sarah nodded. “Dad used to come visit me in secret. He told me about you. He told me you were strong, and kind.”

“But the text message,” I said frantically, looking at Margaret. “Someone sent me a picture of Leo’s bear. They said Isabella didn’t work alone.”

Margaret smiled gently. She held up her phone.

“I sent it, dear,” Margaret said.

Gabriel and I stared at her in shock. “Mom? Why?”

“Because Daniel and Isabella were too arrogant to realize I knew everything,” Margaret said, her voice steady and proud. “I knew Isabella had another partner inside the family trying to steal the bonds. So, while you were at the bank, I had Gabriel’s guards move Sarah to this secure room. And I sent you that text to force Isabella’s secret partner out of hiding.”

“Who?” Gabriel demanded.

Before Margaret could answer, the door to the hospital room opened.

A man in a sharp suit walked in, stopping dead when he saw Gabriel’s men aiming their guns at him.

It was Gabriel’s trusted head of security. Marcus.

Marcus dropped his weapon immediately, raising his hands.

“Marcus,” Gabriel said, the betrayal heavy in his voice. “You?”

“He was feeding Isabella our security protocols,” Margaret said firmly. “He’s the one who let Valerie Stone into the clinic.”

Gabriel nodded to his men. They tackled Marcus to the floor and dragged him away.

Gabriel walked over to Margaret and kissed her cheek. “You’re a genius, Mom.”

Margaret smiled, stroking Leo’s hair as the little boy woke up and rubbed his eyes.

“I’m just a mother protecting her family,” Margaret said.

Gabriel turned to Sarah’s bed. He took her hand.

“Sarah,” Gabriel said, his voice thick with emotion. “I am so sorry for what you’ve been through. But I promise you, nobody will ever hurt you or Claire again. You are Morettis. And this family protects its own.”

Sarah smiled through her tears, squeezing his hand.

Leo hopped off Margaret’s lap and ran over to Gabriel, hugging his leg.

Gabriel picked the boy up, smiling genuinely for the first time in what looked like years.

I stood there, looking at my mother, my son, Margaret, and my uncle Gabriel.

For the first time in my life, I wasn’t just surviving.
