Chapter 9 - The Rightful Place

The sun rose over the Chicago skyline, casting a warm, golden light through the massive windows of the Moretti estate.
For the first time in seventeen years, the mansion felt entirely peaceful.
I was standing in the grand foyer, watching the staff clear away the remains of the disastrous engagement party.
Upstairs, my sister Lily was fast asleep in a plush guest bed, treated by Luca's private doctor and completely safe.
The police had raided the Bellini estate at dawn. Vanessa and her father were in federal custody, their stolen millions seized, their empire crumbling overnight.
I walked into the dining room.
Walter Bishop was sitting at the head of the long mahogany table. In front of him sat a massive, hot breakfast—pancakes, eggs, and fresh coffee.
Emma sat beside him, smiling as she poured him a fresh cup.
Luca stood by the window, watching them. When he saw me enter, his posture softened.
"How is Lily?" Luca asked gently.
"She's resting," I smiled. "Thank you, Mr. Moretti. For everything."
"It's Luca," he corrected softly. "You saved my life last night, Emily. You saved Emma. You don't call me 'sir' ever again."
I blushed, looking down at the floor.
Luca walked over to the table and sat down next to Walter. He didn't sit at the head of the table; he let the old man have it.
"Walter," Luca began, pulling a thick envelope from his jacket. "I know money can't bring Daniel back. But this is the deed to a brownstone in the city. It's fully paid for. It belongs to you and Emma."
Walter stared at the document, his hands trembling. "Luca... this is too much."
"It's not enough," Luca said firmly. "Daniel gave his life so I could have mine. I will spend the rest of my days making sure his family never suffers again."
Emma reached out and squeezed Luca’s hand. "Thank you, Uncle Luca."
Luca smiled, a genuine, burden-free smile.
He turned to me. "Emily. I have a question for you."
"Yes?"
"My estate manager quit this morning," Luca said, leaning back in his chair. "He apparently didn't like the new direction the family is taking. I need someone sharp, loyal, and fearless to run this house."
I stared at him, stunned. "You want me to run the estate?"
"I trust you more than anyone," Luca said seriously. "The salary is triple what you're making now. Lily’s medical bills will be covered in full."
Tears pricked my eyes. I had spent my entire life scraping by, fighting to survive. And now, I was finally safe.
"I accept," I smiled brightly.
The heavy oak doors of the dining room swung open. Dante walked in, looking relaxed for the first time in years.
"Boss," Dante grinned. "The lawyers just called. The offshore accounts have been frozen by the Feds. Silvio’s loyalists have all surrendered or fled the city."
"Good," Luca nodded. "We clean the slate today. No more dirty money. No more betrayals."
We sat down together at the table. The mafia boss, the old mechanic, the nursing student, and the new estate manager.

We were a broken, strange group of people, but as Walter raised his coffee mug in a silent toast, I realized something beautiful.
We were a family.
