Chapter 8 - THE CONFESSION IN THE RAIN

The euphoria of the reunion shattered instantly, replaced by a cold, suffocating dread.

"What are you doing?!" I screamed, lunging forward as the FBI agent wrenched Michael’s arms behind his back, locking the heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.

"Mommy!" Lily cried, terrified, reaching out for her father.

I scooped Lily up, holding her tightly to my chest, staring in absolute horror as two more armed agents surrounded Michael.

"Arthur Vance isn't dead!" I shouted at the lead agent, pointing frantically toward the shadows where Luca had shot the mechanic earlier. "Luca shot him in the shoulder! He was right there!"

The lead agent, a tall, stern man with a dripping raincoat, looked at me with clinical detachment.

"Arthur Vance was found dead in a ditch a mile from here, Mrs. Hayes," the agent stated coldly. "He took a bullet to the chest from a high-powered rifle."

The world spun.

"No," I gasped. "That’s impossible. We saw him here. He was alive."

The agent ignored me, turning his attention to Michael.

"We have you on federal wiretaps discussing your intent to hunt down everyone involved in the cover-up of your attempted murder, Mr. Hayes," the agent said. "Arthur Vance was at the top of that list."

Michael didn't fight the cuffs. He didn't yell. He stood remarkably calm in the pouring rain, looking back at me with an expression that shattered my heart.

It was an expression of quiet resignation.

"Michael, tell them you didn't do it!" I begged, tears blurring my vision. "Tell them you were with the FBI!"

Michael looked down at the muddy asphalt.

"I’m sorry, Claire," Michael whispered, his voice barely audible over the rain.

"No," I breathed, backing away. "No, you didn't kill him. You’re a good man, Michael."

"He was going to hurt you," Michael said, finally looking up, his eyes burning with a dark, terrifying intensity I had never seen before. "I listened to the wiretaps, Claire. Vance knew I was alive. He was coming to the apartment tonight to finish the job. I intercepted him on the access road before he got to you."

My blood ran cold.

The man I had mourned for three years hadn't just been hiding. He had been fighting a shadow war. He had crossed a line he could never uncross.

"He raised his gun at me, Claire," Michael pleaded, desperation bleeding into his voice. "It was self-defense. I swear it."

"Tell it to the judge," the lead agent grunted, shoving Michael toward a waiting black transport van.

"Wait!"

The voice roared over the chaos, cutting through the heavy rain.

Everyone turned.

The doors of the ambulance that was preparing to leave suddenly burst open.

Luca Moretti stood in the doorway, pushing a protesting medic aside. He leaned heavily on the metal frame, his face pale and contorted in pain from his crushed legs, but his eyes were sharp and lethal.

"Release him," Luca commanded, his voice carrying the unquestionable authority of the Moretti empire.

The lead agent scoffed, resting a hand on his holster.

"You’re in no position to give orders, Moretti," the agent sneered. "Your empire was just seized by the federal government. You’re going to spend the rest of your life in a supermax prison."

Luca didn't flinch. He slowly limped down the ramp of the ambulance, refusing assistance from the medics.

He stopped five feet from the agent.

"I didn't kill Arthur Vance," Luca said loudly, ensuring every agent in the shipyard heard him.

"We know," the agent replied. "We have the husband."

"No," Luca said, a fierce, terrifying smile spreading across his bloody face. "You don't understand. I ordered the hit on Arthur Vance."

The entire shipyard fell dead silent.

I stared at Luca in absolute shock.

Michael’s eyes went wide. "Luca, what are you doing?" he hissed urgently.

Luca ignored him, keeping his eyes locked on the federal agent.

"Arthur Vance tried to assassinate me seven years ago," Luca lied smoothly, his voice unwavering. "I discovered he was still alive tonight. I ordered one of my snipers to intercept him on the access road and execute him."

The lead agent frowned, deeply suspicious.

"We have wiretaps of Hayes saying he wanted Vance dead," the agent challenged.

"Wanting someone dead isn't a crime," Luca countered effortlessly. "Pull the ballistics from Vance’s body. You’ll find the bullet came from a .338 Lapua Magnum. A sniper rifle. Michael Hayes is carrying a 12-gauge shotgun."

The agent hesitated, glancing back at Michael’s weapon resting on the hood of an SUV.

Luca stepped closer, lowering his voice so only the agent could hear.

"You have Don Salvatore. You have Vanessa Bellini. You have the entire Commission," Luca said quietly. "You have the biggest bust in the history of the FBI. Do you really want to jeopardize your promotion by arresting the wrong man for a petty revenge killing?"

The agent stared at Luca, processing the tactical advantage.

If the FBI arrested Michael, it was a messy self-defense case involving their own informant. If they pinned the murder on a phantom mafia sniper ordered by Luca Moretti, it neatly tied up a loose end and gave them leverage over the last remaining boss.

"You’re confessing to ordering a murder, Moretti," the agent warned. "That carries a life sentence."

Luca looked past the agent, his dark eyes meeting mine.

He saw me holding Lily, shivering in the rain, my face pale with terror. He saw the cheap gold wedding band on my finger.

He saw the family he had never had, the family he had almost destroyed, and the family he now had the power to save.

"I know," Luca said softly, his gaze never leaving mine. "I’m guilty."

"Luca, no!" I screamed, stepping forward. "Tell them the truth! You didn't do it!"

Luca offered me a faint, melancholy smile.

"Some debts," Luca whispered, echoing the words he had spoken to me at the engagement dinner, "can never be repaid, Claire. But I can try."

He turned his back to me and held out his wrists to the federal agent.

"Arrest me," Luca commanded.

The agent didn't hesitate. He pulled out a pair of handcuffs and locked them around Luca’s wrists, reading him his Miranda rights in a monotone voice.

Two more agents stepped forward, uncuffing Michael.

Michael rubbed his raw wrists, staring at Luca in complete disbelief as the mafia boss was led toward a federal transport van.

"Why did you do that?" Michael yelled after him. "You’re throwing your life away for me!"

Luca stopped at the doors of the van. He looked back over his shoulder.

"You pulled me out of a burning car seven years ago, Michael," Luca said quietly. "You gave me seven years I didn't deserve. Now, I’m giving them back."

He looked at me one last time, a silent goodbye passing between us.

"Take her home, Michael," Luca said. "Keep her safe."

The doors of the van slammed shut, sealing Luca Moretti inside.

The sirens wailed as the federal convoy began to pull out of the shipyard, taking the last remnants of the Chicago mafia with them.

I stood in the freezing rain, clutching Lily, watching the taillights fade into the darkness.

Michael walked over to me, wrapping his arms around us both, burying his face in my hair.

"It’s over, Claire," Michael whispered, his voice trembling. "It’s finally over."

I held onto him, tears streaming down my face, mourning the tragic sacrifice of a man who had chosen to be a savior instead of a king.

But as Michael pulled away to wipe my tears, my eyes caught something glinting in the mud where Luca had surrendered.

I slowly knelt down, picking it up with trembling fingers.

It was Luca’s silver watch. The one with the cracked face, frozen at 11:42. The watch he had shown me in his study.

But it wasn't broken anymore.

The glass had been carefully removed.

And tucked inside the casing, neatly folded, was a tiny piece of paper with a handwritten note.

I opened it, reading the words scribbled in Luca’s sharp handwriting.

Claire,

If you are reading this, I am in federal custody. Do not mourn for me. I am exactly where I need to be.

The Bellini family is destroyed, but the men who truly control this city—the politicians and judges they paid—are still untouchable by the FBI.

They think they have won.

They don't know I have the real shadow ledger memorized.

And they don't know I just walked into a federal supermax prison... where every single one of my loyal men is waiting.

May you like

I’m not surrendering, Claire.

I’m taking the war inside.
