Chapter 9 - THE LETTER IN THE SAFE

I stared at the dusty envelope in Michael’s hand.

My name?

That was impossible. I was a teenager when Luca’s mother died. We lived on the opposite side of Chicago. We were completely different worlds.

Luca carefully took the envelope from his brother.

The paper was aged, yellowed at the edges, but the handwriting on the front was elegant and perfectly preserved in black ink.

It read: For Emily Carter. To be opened when the truth is found.

My legs felt weak. I reached out and touched the paper. It felt heavy with secrets.

“How did your mother know my name?” I whispered.

Luca looked just as bewildered. He broke the wax seal with his thumb and pulled out a single sheet of stationary.

He didn't read it out loud. He handed it to me.

My hands shook violently as I unfolded the paper.

Dear Emily,

If you are reading this, it means you have found your way into my son’s life. It also means Dante’s treachery has finally been exposed.

Ten years ago, your father, Thomas, came to me in secret. He was working at the garage and overheard Dante planning a hit on my husband. Thomas risked his life to warn us.

He saved our family that night. But he refused to take any money. He said he just wanted to keep his wife and daughter safe.

I knew Dante would never stop looking for the man who leaked his plan. So, I made a deal with your mother. We set up a fake debt—a mortgage paper trail—to ensure your family would always have a reason to stay under the radar, protected by the Bellinis, who were our allies at the time.

I always told your father that the Moretti family pays its debts. He saved my husband's life.

I wrote this letter and hid it in Dante’s safe before I died, knowing Dante was too arrogant to ever throw away leverage. I prayed that one day, the truth would come out.

Emily, you are not a maid in this house. You are family. You always have been.

With eternal gratitude,

Rosa Moretti.

I stopped reading.

The words blurred together as tears finally spilled over my eyelashes and cascaded down my cheeks.

My mother didn't sell me out. She didn't sign a contract with the mafia to save herself.

She signed it to protect us. It was a cover story. A shield built by Luca’s mother to keep Dante from hunting my father down for saving the Moretti family ten years ago.

I covered my face with my hands, sobbing openly.

Every lie I had believed about my parents, every ounce of shame I had carried for being poor, for being in debt—it was all washed away. My father was a hero.

Strong arms wrapped around me.

Luca pulled me tightly against his chest. I buried my face in his shirt, letting the years of stress and fear leave my body.

“I’ve got you,” Luca murmured into my hair. “You’re safe now. I’ve got you.”

Michael stood nearby, wiping his own eyes.

“She knew,” Michael said softly. “Mom knew Dante was a snake, but she couldn't prove it before she got sick. She left the breadcrumbs for us.”

Luca kissed the top of my head, pulling back just enough to look me in the eyes.

“Your father saved my family,” Luca said, his voice thick with emotion. “And tonight, you saved my son. You saved my brother.”

He wiped a tear from my cheek with his thumb.

“The debt is gone, Emily. The lies are gone. This house belongs to you just as much as it belongs to me.”

I looked up at him. The dangerous, terrifying mafia boss was gone. In his place was a man who loved fiercely, who protected his own, and who was looking at me like I was the most important thing in the world.

“I don't know how to be anything but the maid,” I whispered.

Luca smiled, a genuine, breathtaking smile.

“Then we’ll figure it out together.”

From the doorway of the bedroom, a small, sleepy voice called out.

“Daddy?”

We turned. Nicholas was standing there, rubbing his eyes. He had put one of his hearing aids back in.

“Are you crying, Emily?” Nicholas asked, looking worried.

I shook my head, laughing through the tears. I walked over and knelt down in front of him.

“No, sweetheart. These are happy tears. The happiest tears I’ve ever cried.”

Nicholas looked at his father. “Is Vanessa gone?”

“She’s gone, buddy,” Luca said, crouching down next to me. “She’s never coming back.”

Nicholas looked between me and Luca. Then, very slowly, a huge, radiant smile spread across his face.

He threw his arms around my neck.

“Good,” Nicholas whispered. “Because I want Emily to stay forever.”

Luca wrapped his arms around both of us, pulling us into a tight, unbreakable hug.

The nightmares were over. The secrets were in the light.

For the first time in my life, I wasn't just surviving. I was exactly where I belonged.

But as we pulled apart, Michael cleared his throat behind us.

“Luca,” Michael said, his voice suddenly tense again. “There was one more thing in the safe.”
