Chapter 12 - THE FINAL TRUTH

Gabriel spun around, freezing when he saw Sarah holding the gun to my head.

"Sarah, what are you doing?" Gabriel yelled.

Marco Rossi laughed from the center of the room. "You never were very smart, Gabriel. You trust too easily."

Sarah's hand didn't shake. Her eyes were completely cold.

"I didn't run from the Rossi family, Gabe," Sarah said, her voice devoid of emotion. "I help run it."

My mind fractured. "Where is my daughter?!"

"She's safe in a car a few miles from here," Sarah said. "As long as Gabriel does exactly what I say."

"Why?" Gabriel asked, his voice low and dangerous. "Daniel was your brother."

"Daniel was a fool!" Sarah spat. "He found out I was working with the Rossis to slowly drain your family's accounts. He threatened to expose me. So I had Vincenzo arrange the warehouse hit."

The final piece of the puzzle snapped into place. It wasn't Leo. It wasn't Vincenzo. Sarah was the puppet master all along. She used her own brother's loyalty against him, and when he got too close to the truth, she had him killed.

"You took my daughter to lure me out here," Gabriel realized. "To finish what you started."

"Chicago belongs to the Rossis now," Sarah said. "Get on your knees, Gabriel."

Gabriel slowly lowered himself to his knees, placing his gun on the ground.

He looked at me, his eyes filled with sorrow. "I'm sorry, Rachel."

"Don't do it, Gabe," I cried.

Sarah smiled, aiming the gun at Gabriel's head. "Tell Daniel I said hi."

But Sarah made one fatal mistake. She had focused entirely on Gabriel, forgetting the woman she was holding hostage. A woman who had spent the last six years fighting for her child’s survival.

I didn't hesitate.

I reached into my coat pocket, pulled out the small handgun Gabriel had given me, and fired blindly backward over my shoulder.

The shot caught Sarah in the leg.

She screamed, dropping her weapon as she collapsed.

In a split second, Gabriel snatched his gun from the floor and fired two shots. Marco Rossi dropped dead before he could even draw his weapon.

Gabriel's men stormed the warehouse, securing the perimeter and zip-tying a bleeding, screaming Sarah.

Gabriel didn't look at them. He sprinted toward me, pulling me into a crushing embrace.

"Are you okay?" he gasped.

"Where is Lily?" I sobbed.

Marcus ran into the warehouse, out of breath. "Gabe! We found the car parked three blocks away. The kid is fine. She's asleep in the backseat."

My knees gave out, and Gabriel caught me, burying his face in my hair.

Later that night, we were back in our quiet suburban home. The police had taken Sarah into federal custody. The Rossi family was dismantled. The nightmare was finally, truly over.

I walked into Lily's room. She was tucked tightly in her bed, clutching her stuffed bear, completely unaware of the horrors of the night.

Gabriel stood in the doorway, watching us. The heavy, dark weight that he had carried for years was finally gone from his shoulders.

He walked over and wrapped his arms around me from behind, resting his chin on my shoulder as we looked down at our daughter.

"No more secrets," Gabriel whispered softly. "No more running. We're safe."

I leaned back into him, holding his hand.

"Yes," I smiled, the tears finally drying. "We're home."
