Chapter 9 - THE HEIR OF CHICAGO

The flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers illuminated the shattered glass of the lobby.

Vanessa Bellini sat in the back of a squad car, her hands cuffed, staring blankly ahead. She wasn't fighting anymore. The USB drive was enough to secure federal indictments for embezzlement, fraud, and the conspiracy to murder Marco Moretti. She would never see the outside of a prison cell again.

Luca stood on the sidewalk, watching the squad car pull away.

He slowly turned to me.

"You saved my family tonight, Emily," he said quietly, the city wind ruffling his dark hair. "You saved my niece. You saved my brother’s legacy."

I smiled tiredly, pulling my coat tighter against the chill. "I just did what was right, Mr. Moretti."

"Luca," he corrected gently. "Call me Luca."

He gestured to his waiting SUV. "Let’s go home."

When we returned to the mansion, the sun was just beginning to rise over Lake Michigan, casting a warm golden light through the massive bay windows.

Grace and Sophie were sitting on the sofa in the living room. When Sophie saw Luca, she jumped up and ran to him.

Luca caught her, lifting her easily into his arms.

"Is the bad lady gone?" Sophie asked softly.

"She’s gone, sweetheart," Luca promised, kissing her forehead. "She can never hurt you again."

He carried Sophie over to the sofa and sat down next to Grace.

Giovanni was sitting in the armchair opposite them, holding a leather briefcase.

"The paperwork has been filed, Mr. Moretti," Giovanni smiled warmly. "The Foundation is officially under Grace’s stewardship. And Sophie’s inheritance is secure."

Grace wiped a tear from her eye. "I still can't believe this is real. After all these years of hiding, of being afraid..."

"You never have to hide again," Luca said. He reached out and took Grace’s hand. "You are family now. This house is yours. Sophie will go to the best music conservatories in the world. And you will never have to clean another office as long as you live."

Grace broke down into happy, relieved sobs.

Sophie looked at me. "Miss Emily? Are you going to be our maid now?"

I laughed softly. "I suppose I am, sweetie."

"Actually," Luca interrupted, looking at me with a serious expression. "I was hoping to offer you a different position."

I blinked. "Sir?"

"My estate manager is retiring next month," Luca said. "I need someone who is smart, brave, and doesn't flinch when things get complicated. I want you to run this household, Emily. Double your current salary. Full benefits. And a permanent apartment in the guest wing."

I stared at him, completely speechless.

"Well?" Luca smiled. "Will you take the job?"

"Yes," I breathed, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes. "Yes, absolutely."

Sophie cheered, clapping her hands.

"Now," Luca said, turning his attention back to his niece. "I believe you promised to play a song for me."

Sophie smiled brightly. She hopped off the sofa, ran to her violin case, and carefully pulled out the beautiful instrument.

She tucked it under her chin, closed her eyes, and began to play.

The sweet, melancholic notes of the old Italian lullaby filled the grand living room.

This time, there was no fear. No secrets.

Luca leaned back against the sofa, closing his eyes, a look of absolute peace washing over his face. He was finally hearing the song his father used to play, played by the niece he never knew he had.

Grace watched her daughter, beaming with pride and love.

I stood by the window, watching the sunrise over the lake, feeling the warmth on my face.

The long night was over. The family was whole again.

And as the final, beautiful note of the lullaby echoed through the mansion, I knew that Thomas Bennett’s sacrifice had not been in vain.

His granddaughter was finally home.

And she was safe.
