Chapter 8 - THE FAMILY HEIRLOOM

Everyone froze.

Stepping out of the mansion, clutching his blood-soaked side but very much alive, was Michael Moretti.

He was leaning heavily on Donato, who had a smug smile on his face.

Vanessa’s face crumpled in absolute horror. “No. No, I hit you. I saw you fall!”

“You hit me in the shoulder,” Michael grunted, coughing slightly as he limped down the steps. “Which is going to ruin my golf swing, but it won't kill me.”

Answer one: Michael survived the shooting in the alley.

Open two: How did he and Donato get back to the estate so fast?

“I called the feds from the car,” Donato said smoothly, answering my unspoken question. “Told them there was a rogue element in the Chicago syndicate trying to assassinate a boss. They were very eager to assist.”

Vanessa began screaming, thrashing wildly as the agents dragged her toward a police cruiser. “You set me up! All of you! Luca, she stole your money! Sofia is a traitor!”

Luca didn't even look at her as they shoved her into the back of the car and slammed the door.

The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the sound of the police radios.

Michael stood before Luca. The two brothers looked at each other for a long, tense moment.

Reversal: Michael had saved Lily and stopped Vanessa, but he was still a traitor who had plotted against Luca’s leadership. The mafia code demanded blood for treason.

Luca looked at Donato. “Did you buy my niece from him?”

Donato chuckled, shaking his head. “No, Luca. Your brother didn't take a dime from me. He came to me for protection. He asked me to take the child back to New York and raise her safely, far away from Vanessa’s reach.”

Luca turned his gaze back to Michael.

“You broke the oath,” Luca said quietly. “You lied to me. You conspired with an outsider.”

Michael nodded, his eyes filled with grim acceptance. “I did. I accept the consequences, Boss.”

Michael slowly reached into his pocket. He pulled out the heavy gold pocket watch—their grandfather’s heirloom, the one Luca had fished out of the lake thinking it was Lily.

Michael held it out to Luca. The ultimate symbol of surrender. He was giving up his birthright, his life in the family.

Luca looked at the watch. Then he looked over at Sofia, who was holding Lily, and Teresa, who was standing proudly beside them.

Luca didn't take the watch.

Instead, he reached out and grabbed the back of Michael’s neck, pulling him forward and pressing their foreheads together.

“You kept our sister safe,” Luca whispered fiercely, tears welling in his eyes. “You protected our blood when I was too blind to see the snake in my own bed.”

Michael’s shoulders shook as a choked sob escaped his throat.

“Keep the watch,” Luca said, stepping back. “You’re a Moretti. You’re my brother.”

I stood near the edge of the driveway, watching the family reunite. My heart was full, but I suddenly felt very out of place. I was still just the maid in a torn apron.

I slowly started to back away, heading toward the shadows of the gate. I needed to walk back to my duplex. I needed to check on my mother.

“Hannah.”

I stopped.

Luca was walking toward me. His suit was ruined, his hair wild, but his posture was completely transformed. The heavy burden of the past three years seemed to have vanished from his shoulders.

He stopped in front of me and looked deeply into my eyes.

“Where are you going?” he asked.

“Home, Mr. Moretti,” I said softly. “My mother… she needs her medication. And I imagine you won't be needing my services anymore.”

Luca shook his head slowly.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, folded piece of paper. He handed it to me.

I unfolded it. It was a check. Written for an amount that made my knees buckle.

“Mr. Moretti,” I gasped. “I can't accept this. This is… this is millions of dollars.”

“It’s Vanessa’s offshore account balance,” Luca said with a small smile. “Consider it a severance package. Because you’re fired as a maid.”

I looked up at him, tears blurring my vision.

“You are moving your mother into the East Wing tomorrow,” Luca said firmly. “We have private doctors who will care for her. And you are going to take over as the Estate Manager.”

“Luca,” Teresa called out, walking over to us with Lily in her arms. The old woman reached out and took my hand, just like she had at the dinner table hours ago. But this time, she wasn't trembling.

“She didn't abandon me, Hannah,” Teresa smiled, tears of joy in her eyes.

“I know, Mrs. Moretti,” I whispered back.

Lily leaned forward in Teresa’s arms, reaching her tiny hand out toward me. I gently took her fingers.

“Thank you, Hannah,” Lily said, her voice clear and sweet.

I looked at Luca, then at Sofia, Michael, and Teresa. They weren't just a mafia syndicate anymore. They were a family that had been broken, poisoned, and finally put back together.

“No,” I smiled, wiping a tear from my cheek. “Thank you.”

The October wind blew across the estate, but for the first time in months, it didn't feel cold. It felt like a fresh start.
