Chapter 12 - A MOTHER’S BLESSING FOR THE WOMAN WHO STAYED

Tears immediately blurred my vision, but I forced myself to keep reading.

“You don’t know me, Raina, but I know you. A month ago, when I realized the danger I was in, I started secretly interviewing nannies. I needed to know that if anything happened to me, my daughter would be protected by someone with a fiercely good heart.”

I gasped, a memory suddenly hitting me like a tidal wave.

Three years ago, right after my husband passed, I had interviewed with a wealthy woman at a coffee shop downtown. She hadn’t hired me. She had just asked me questions about love, about grief, about how to protect a child from the world.

That woman was Claire.

I swallowed hard and continued reading, my voice shaking.

“I didn’t hire you that day because I didn’t want to drag you into my nightmare. But I left your resume on Daniel’s desk, buried under his paperwork, praying he would find it when he needed help the most. I knew Vanessa and my father would come for my family. I knew Beatrice would need an ally. And most of all, I knew Ivy would need a mother.”

Ivy wrapped her arms tightly around my waist, pressing her face into my apron.

“Daniel,” the letter continued, and I looked up at him. He was weeping silently. I handed him the letter so he could read his part.

He cleared his throat, his voice rough with emotion.

“Daniel, my love. Forgive me for running. I was trying to save you from my family’s debts. If Raina is standing there with you, it means she fought for you when I couldn’t. Trust her. Protect her. Build a life with her. You both deserve to be happy again.”

Daniel lowered the letter.

The heavy weight that had suffocated this house for three years finally lifted, evaporating into the Sunday morning sunlight.

Claire hadn’t abandoned them. She had spent her final days ensuring they would survive. She had hand-picked the woman who would piece her broken family back together.

Daniel stepped forward. He didn’t say a word. He just wrapped his arms around me and Ivy, pulling us both into a deep, desperate embrace.

Beatrice smiled from the table, sipping her tea, the pearl earrings catching the light.

I rested my head against Daniel’s chest, holding Ivy tight against my side.

For the first time in years, none of us were just surviving.

We were home.
