Chapter 12 - THE NEW HEIRLOOM

When we arrived back at the mansion, the sun was beginning to set, casting a golden, warm glow over the sprawling estate.
"Close your eyes," Silas said as we stepped out of the car.
"Silas, I swear, if you bought me a pony—"
"Just close them," he chuckled, placing his hands gently over my eyes.
He guided me through the front doors, down the grand hallway, and out the back French doors onto the massive stone terrace overlooking the gardens.
"Okay. Open them."
I opened my eyes and gasped.
In the center of Elena’s beautiful, blooming rose garden, a massive wooden swing set had been built. It had a fort, a slide, and two swings.
Leo and Sophie were currently swinging as high as they could, laughing hysterically as Marco—who looked absolutely ridiculous in his sharp black suit—pushed them.
"You built them a playground," I whispered, tears welling in my eyes.
"I want this house to feel like a home," Silas said, stepping up behind me and wrapping both arms around my waist. "For all of us."
I leaned back against his chest, watching our children play. Our children. The thought felt so natural, so right.
Silas reached into his pocket. "I have one more thing."
I turned around.
Silas wasn't holding a diamond ring. He was holding a simple, delicate gold chain. Hanging from the chain was a small, beautifully crafted golden locket.
He opened the locket. Inside, on one side, was a tiny picture of Sophie. On the other side, a picture of Leo.
"Maren tried to use the past to destroy us," Silas said, his voice deep and thick with emotion. "She tried to use heirlooms of pain. I want to give you something new. A promise for the future."
He looked down at me, his eyes full of a love so fierce and protective it took my breath away. "I love you, Hannah. I want you by my side. As my partner, as my equal, and as a mother to our kids. Will you wear this?"
I couldn't speak. My heart was overflowing. I simply nodded, the tears spilling over my cheeks.
Silas stepped closer, his warm hands brushing my neck as he clasped the locket behind me. The gold settled over my heart, warm and heavy with promise.
Then, he cupped my face and kissed me. It wasn't a demanding kiss, but a tender, profound seal of the family we had fought through hell to create.
"Daddy! Mom! Look!" Leo yelled from the swing set.

We pulled apart, smiling, and walked hand-in-hand down the stone steps toward the garden. The monsters were gone. The secrets were buried.
And for the first time in my life, looking at the mafia boss holding my hand and the children laughing in the sun, I knew exactly where I belonged.
