Chapter 11 - THE TUSCAN STANDOFF

“Drop the gun, Thomas,” Carlo ordered casually, adjusting his tailored suit jacket.
My father stood at the end of the hallway, the shotgun aimed squarely at Carlo’s chest. He didn't blink. He didn't lower the weapon.
“I ran from you for twenty years, Carlo,” my father said, his voice steady. “I’m not running today.”
“Loyal to the end,” Carlo sighed mockingly. “But math was always your strong suit, Thomas. Look around. You have one shotgun. I have five men with automatic weapons. If you pull that trigger, I die, but you, your daughter, and your new grandson will be shredded before my body hits the floor.”
I stood paralyzed in the kitchen, my mind screaming at me to run upstairs to Leo, but a guard already had his rifle pointed at my chest.
Matteo slowly stepped in front of me, shielding my body with his own.
Carlo chuckled. “Ah, Matteo. Playing the hero now? A bit late for redemption, don't you think?”
“Let them go, Carlo,” Matteo growled. “You have the syndicate. You have the ports. They are no threat to you.”
“They are the only threat to me!” Carlo snapped, his warm facade dropping to reveal the ruthless killer underneath. “As long as Rosa’s bloodline survives, there is a legitimate heir to challenge my claim! And as long as Thomas breathes, he can testify to the commission about my theft twenty years ago!”
Carlo pointed his cane at me. “Bring the boy down.”
“No!” I screamed, lunging forward.
Matteo caught me, holding me back as a guard pressed the barrel of his rifle against Matteo’s wounded shoulder. Matteo grunted in pain but didn't let me go.
“I said bring the boy down,” Carlo repeated, nodding to two of his men.
They marched toward the stairs.
“Carlo, please!” I begged, tears streaming down my face. “He’s three years old! He doesn't know anything! We’ll disappear! You’ll never see us again!”
Carlo ignored me.
The men reached the first landing.
Suddenly, a loud, mechanical hum echoed from outside the villa. The sound of heavy tires crunching gravel, accompanied by the distinct, terrifying whir of a helicopter descending over the vineyards.
Carlo frowned. “What is that?”
Before his men could answer, the massive floor-to-ceiling windows of the villa shattered inward.
Flashbang grenades rolled across the tile floor, detonating with blinding white light and deafening force.
I screamed, covering my ears as Matteo tackled me to the ground, shielding me from the explosion.
Gunfire erupted. But it wasn't coming from Carlo’s men.
A specialized tactical strike team, wearing unmarked black uniforms, poured through the shattered windows and the broken front door. They moved with terrifying military precision, dropping Carlo’s guards in seconds.
My father didn't hesitate. He racked the shotgun and fired, taking out the guard on the stairs before he could reach Leo.
Through the ringing in my ears, I heard a voice I never expected to hear again.
“Secure the perimeter! Nobody leaves alive!”
I looked up through the smoke.
Walking through the shattered front door, flanked by heavily armed mercenaries, was a woman in a wheelchair, pushed by a tall, imposing bodyguard.
It was Rosa Moretti.
She looked pale, fragile, and absolutely lethal.
Carlo, bleeding from a graze on his cheek, stared in absolute horror at the matriarch he thought he had outmaneuvered.
“Rosa,” Carlo gasped, dropping his cane. “You’re supposed to be in New York.”
Rosa smiled coldly.

“I built this family, Carlo,” she whispered. “Did you really think I would let you tear it down?”
