Chapter 8

"They are not taking my wife," Dominic roared, his voice echoing through the study.
"Dominic, if I go to jail, they'll put Maisie back in the system," I panicked, gripping his shirt. "Thorne will take her from child services!"
"Nobody is going to jail," Dominic said, his eyes burning with a dark, terrifying fire. He looked at Marcus. "Stall the police at the gate. Tell them my lawyers are reviewing the warrant. Give me twenty minutes."
"Yes, Boss." Marcus ran out.
Dominic turned to his desk, firing up his computer. His fingers flew across the keyboard.
"What are you doing?" I asked.
"Vanessa thinks she can use the law against us," Dominic said grimly. "She forgot who she's dealing with. I don't just own casinos, Claire. I own information."
He pulled up a hidden, encrypted server. Lines of banking data flooded the screen.
"When Vanessa was living here, I had my tech team monitor her offshore accounts," Dominic explained. "I thought she was just spending my money on clothes. But look at this."
He pointed to a series of massive wire transfers.
"Two million dollars," Dominic read. "Transferred last week to an account in the Cayman Islands. And the recipient name?"
He highlighted the text. Victor Thorne.
"She didn't lose the diamonds," I realized. "She sold them to Thorne to buy her way back into his good graces. Then she planted fakes in my apartment to frame me."
"Exactly," Dominic said, printing the documents. "We have the wire transfers, the IP addresses, and the communication logs. It proves she falsified a police report and orchestrated a robbery."
He grabbed the papers and turned to me. "Stay here with Maisie. Lock the door."
Dominic walked out of the study, the papers in hand. I locked the heavy door and sat next to Maisie, holding her tightly.
Through the thick walls, I could hear shouting outside the front gates. Then, the sound of sirens blipping.
Ten minutes later, a soft knock came at the door.
"Claire. It's me."
I opened the door. Dominic stood there, a victorious, exhausted smile on his face.
"The police are gone," he said. "The captain took one look at the wire transfers and realized Thorne was using them. They issued an immediate warrant for Vanessa's arrest for grand larceny and perjury."
I threw my arms around his neck, burying my face in his chest. He caught me instantly, wrapping his strong arms around my waist, lifting me off the ground.
"It's over," he whispered into my hair. "You're safe."
But as he set me down, a sudden, violent crash echoed from the back of the house.

The sound of breaking glass.
Marcus yelled over the radio. "Boss! East wing breached! It's Vanessa!"
