Chapter 11 - THE BOY IN THE SHADOWS

“Toby?” Caleb choked out, staring at his eight-year-old daughter.

Nora nodded, rubbing her tired eyes against Caleb’s shoulder. “Mommy’s little boy. He was in the white truck when it came to get me tonight. He has dark hair like you, Daddy.”

My heart stopped.

Answer one: Anna had Caleb’s son. A two-year-old boy named Toby. Bell hadn't just stolen Caleb’s wife and his health; they had stolen his heir.

“Why didn't you tell me, sweetheart?” Caleb asked, his voice trembling with a mixture of profound grief and explosive rage.

“Mommy said it was a secret,” Nora whispered. “She said if I told you about Toby, the bad men would take him away forever.”

Caleb handed Nora to my mother in the SUV. He closed the car door and turned to the street.

He didn't yell. He didn't break down.

He became terrifyingly calm.

“They have my son,” Caleb said to the empty air. “They want my shipping routes. And they left a silver pacifier in your bag to prove they can touch us anywhere.”

“We call the FBI,” I said, grabbing his arm. “We tell them about Toby.”

“No,” Caleb said, pulling out his phone. He dialed a number from memory. “The FBI moves too slow. The syndicate will leverage the boy or kill him the second they see a badge. I’m doing this my way.”

He put the phone to his ear.

“Elias,” Caleb spoke into the receiver. “I need the cleaning crew. And I need the armory unlocked. We’re going hunting.”

Thirty minutes later, we were standing in the basement of Caleb’s mansion. The space I thought was a wine cellar was actually a reinforced bunker.

A man named Elias—a heavily scarred older man who looked like he had survived three wars—was laying out tactical gear and weaponry on a long metal table.

“The tracker on Anna’s ambulance,” Elias grunted, handing Caleb a heavy Kevlar vest. “My guys intercepted the police convoy ten minutes ago. We have Bell.”

“Where is he?” Caleb asked, strapping the vest over his chest.

“Tied to a chair in the soundproof room upstairs,” Elias smiled grimly.

I followed Caleb up the stairs.

Dr. Bell was sitting in a steel chair, his face bruised and bloody from the warehouse fight. When he saw Caleb walk in, he laughed.

“You can't kill me, Caleb. The feds are looking for me.”

“I don't care about the feds,” Caleb said, grabbing Bell by the throat and slamming his head against the wall. “Where is my son?”

Bell’s arrogant smile faltered. “I don't know what you're talking about.”

I stepped forward, pulling a syringe from my pocket. It was filled with a thick, milky liquid.

“I’m a nurse, Nathan,” I said coldly. “I know exactly how to administer a paralytic that mimics a massive stroke. You’ll be entirely conscious, but locked inside your own body. Unable to move. Unable to speak. Forever.”

Bell stared at the needle, genuine fear finally entering his eyes.

“Wait,” Bell panicked as I tapped the syringe. “The syndicate! They took the boy from Anna’s safehouse last night! They’re holding him at the old shipyard on Pier 9. They’re using him to force you to sign the contracts!”

Caleb dropped Bell.

“Elias,” Caleb ordered. “Lock him in the vault. If I don't come back, leave him to starve.”

Caleb turned to me. “Stay here with Nora and your mother. It’s too dangerous.”

“You need a medic,” I said, packing my trauma kit. “And you need someone to check the boy. I’m going.”

Caleb looked at my determined face, then nodded once.

We drove to Pier 9 in complete silence. The morning fog was rolling off the water, obscuring the massive cargo containers stacked like metal mountains.

Elias and his men fanned out, silenced weapons drawn.

“There,” Caleb pointed to a small, lit office suspended above the loading dock.

We moved silently up the metal stairs. Caleb kicked the door open.

Inside the office, a man in a tailored suit sat behind a desk.

It wasn't a syndicate boss.

It was Caleb’s own lawyer, David.

And sitting on the floor behind him, playing quietly with a wooden block, was a little boy with Caleb’s dark hair.
