Chapter 9 - THE PHOTOGRAPH OF THE HIDDEN HEIR

(The Climax & Resolution)

Three weeks later, the snow in Chicago had melted.

The Moretti empire had been entirely restructured.

Vincent Caruso and his son Marco were sitting in federal prison, facing life sentences after Dominic anonymously delivered the digitalis receipt to the FBI.

The truth about Emily’s death had been quietly released to the press as a tragic, long-unsolved medical conspiracy. The syndicate was cleansed of its treacherous elements.

Samuel Bennett’s name was officially cleared. He received a full, public exoneration and a massive settlement from the state.

But Samuel didn't take the money and run.

He stood in the bright, sunlit gardens of the newly rebuilt Moretti estate, wearing a crisp security uniform. He was the new Head of Estate Security.

Beside him, Bruno was rolling in the fresh spring grass, barking happily at a butterfly.

Dominic stood on the patio, watching them.

He wore a tailored navy suit, looking completely at peace. The heavy, dark circles that used to sit under his eyes were gone.

Claire walked out onto the patio.

She wasn't wearing a maid’s uniform. She wore a simple, elegant blue dress. She was now the Director of the Moretti Foundation, managing the family’s legitimate charities.

“Your father looks happy,” Dominic said, smiling at her.

“He is,” Claire beamed. “He loves being back with Captain. And my mother’s knee surgery went perfectly yesterday. Thank you, Dominic.”

“You don't owe me a thank you, Claire. I owed you a life.”

He turned to face her.

The air between them felt different now. Without the secrets, without the tragedy, there was only the undeniable, electric connection that had kept them fighting for each other in the flames and the train station.

Dominic reached out and gently tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.

“I don't want you working for me anymore, Claire,” he whispered.

Claire’s smile faltered. “What?”

“I want you to be my partner,” Dominic said, stepping closer. “In everything.”

Claire looked up into his dark eyes. She saw the absolute sincerity of a man who had finally found his equal.

She smiled, leaning up and kissing him.

Dominic wrapped his arms around her waist, kissing her back, feeling the last shadows of his past melt away in the sunlight.

It was a perfect, deeply satisfying ending.

Until that evening.

Dominic sat alone in his restored study.

He opened his desk drawer and pulled out the 8x10 photograph he had found at the train station when Marco dropped his coat.

He stared at it under the desk lamp.

It was a picture of Dominic’s father, taken twenty years ago.

But he wasn't alone.

He was standing on a beach in Miami, holding the hand of a young boy who looked exactly like Dominic.

On the back of the photo, written in Marco’s handwriting, were two words:

The Replacement.

Dominic’s blood ran cold.

He didn't just have a sister. He had a half-brother. A brother Marco had apparently found and was planning to use to usurp the Moretti throne.

Before Dominic could process the revelation, his private cell phone rang.

An unknown number.

Dominic answered it.

“Hello?”

A smooth, cultured voice spoke on the other end.

“Hello, Dominic. I hear you survived the fire.”

Dominic tightened his grip on the phone. “Who is this?”

May you like

“Let’s just say we have the same eyes,” the voice chuckled. “I’m in Chicago, brother. And I think it’s time we met.”
