Chapter 4 - [THE PRODIGAL BROTHER RETURNS]

“Dante,” Rosa whispered, tears instantly spilling down her wrinkled cheeks.

Matteo staggered backward, bumping into the dining table. Silverware clattered against fine china. “You died in Palermo. The boat exploded.”

Dante walked slowly into the grand foyer, rain dripping from his dark coat onto the marble floor. He had a jagged scar running along his jawline, but his eyes were exactly the same piercing gray I remembered.

“I’m hard to kill, little brother,” Dante said, his voice deep and gravelly. He didn't look at Matteo. His eyes were locked on Vanessa. “Though I hear the Bellinis tried their best.”

Vanessa actually took a step back, the locket slipping from her fingers.

I dove for it, catching the silver chain before it hit the floor. I clutched my mother’s locket to my chest.

“You set the bomb,” Dante said, walking methodically toward Vanessa. “Your father wanted the Moretti family destabilized so he could slide his favorite daughter into Matteo’s bed and take over our operations.”

“That’s a lie!” Vanessa shouted, but her voice trembled.

Dante dropped the heavy steel briefcase on the dining table. The thud made several relatives flinch. He popped the latches and opened it. Inside were stacks of photographs, bank statements, and a heavy, black leather ledger.

“I’ve spent five years in the shadows tracking your family’s money,” Dante said. He looked at Matteo. “She doesn’t love you, you idiot. She’s bleeding you dry. The debt you owe the syndicate? She created it. She’s been skimming from our accounts for two years.”

Matteo looked at the ledger, then at Vanessa. “Is this true?”

“He’s a ghost, Matteo!” Vanessa cried. “He’s trying to ruin us!”

Dante turned to me. The anger in his eyes softened for a fraction of a second. “Claire. It’s good to see you. Vincenzo told me you were the only one who could be trusted with the Tuscany estate.”

I stared at him. “Vincenzo told you? But Vincenzo has been dead for two years.”

Dante nodded. “I know. I was with him when he died. He knew Matteo was weak. He knew the Bellinis were circling. That’s why he left the estate to you, Claire. It’s not just a vineyard.”

Vanessa lunged for the briefcase, but Dante caught her wrist effortlessly, twisting it just enough to make her gasp. “Don’t touch that.”

“What is the estate, Dante?” I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs.

Dante released Vanessa and looked at the entire room. “The Tuscany estate sits on top of the largest untraceable gold reserve in Europe. Vincenzo hid the family’s true wealth there decades ago. Whoever holds the deed, controls the true power of the Moretti family.”

The room erupted into gasps.

Matteo stared at me, his eyes wide with newfound greed. “Claire… you’re a billionaire.”

I looked at the husband who had just tried to commit me to an asylum to steal my inheritance.

“No, Matteo,” I said coldly. “I’m leaving you.”

“You can’t leave,” Vanessa hissed, rubbing her wrist. “My father’s men have the house surrounded. No one leaves until I have that deed.”

She pulled a small silver phone from her clutch and pressed a single button.

The heavy mahogany doors of the dining room slammed shut, and the lock clicked.

From the hallway, a child’s terrified scream pierced the air.

“Auntie Claire!”

My blood ran cold. It was Leo, my seven-year-old nephew.
