Chapter 8 - THE GOLD WATCH ON THE TABLE

The four mafia bosses stared at the gold pocket watch resting on the polished mahogany table.

Senator Vance’s condescending smile faltered.

“A recording device?” Vance repeated, his voice losing some of its smooth political polish. “Are you trying to blackmail the Commission, Mrs. Moretti? That is a very dangerous game.”

I didn't flinch. I sat perfectly straight, channeling every ounce of aristocratic confidence I had learned over seven years of society galas.

“I'm not blackmailing anyone, Senator,” I said calmly. “I am simply sharing evidence.”

I reached forward and pressed a hidden button on the side of the gold watch.

The room fell dead silent as the tiny, high-quality speaker crackled to life.

It was a recording of a phone call.

The first voice was unmistakable. It belonged to Lorenzo Russo.

“The hit is set for tonight. Bianca will open the gates. We take the boy, and we kill Dante in his own home.”

The second voice on the recording made the entire room freeze.

It was Senator Robert Vance.

“Make it clean, Lorenzo. The Commission will look the other way. Once Dante is dead, I will initiate the proxy takeover of the Moretti Foundation. We split the assets sixty-forty, as agreed.”

“And the wife?” Lorenzo asked on the tape.

“Collateral damage,” Vance replied coldly. “Let her burn with the penthouse.”

I pressed the button again, stopping the recording.

The silence in the ballroom was absolute.

I didn't look at Vance. I looked at the other three heads of the Five Families sitting at the table. Their faces were pale with shock and outrage.

“As you can hear,” I said smoothly, folding my hands on the table, “Lorenzo Russo didn't act alone. He was acting on direct orders from the head of this Commission. Senator Vance orchestrated a hit on a sitting Boss to steal his legitimate assets.”

I leaned forward slightly.

“And I assure you, gentlemen, I have copies of this recording hidden in secure locations. If Dante or I do not walk out of this hotel tonight, that audio goes directly to the FBI, the New York Times, and the Ethics Committee of the United States Senate.”

Senator Vance’s face turned a mottled, furious purple.

“This is a fabrication!” Vance sputtered, standing up so fast his chair scraped loudly against the floor. “It’s AI! A deepfake designed to frame me!”

Dante didn't move. He leaned back in his chair, a slow, predatory smile spreading across his face. He looked at me with an expression of absolute, awestruck pride.

“It’s not a fake, Robert,” Dante said softly. “And we all know it.”

The boss of the Genovese family, an elderly man with sharp eyes, slowly turned to look at Vance.

“You broke the sacred rule, Robert,” the old man rasped. “You ordered a hit on a Commission member without a vote. You tried to steal from the pot.”

“He’s lying!” Vance shouted, sweating profusely now. He gestured wildly to the guards at the doors. “Kill them! Kill them both right now!”

The guards didn't move.

The old Genovese boss raised a single hand.

“Stand down,” he ordered the guards.

The guards immediately lowered their hands from their weapons. Their loyalty was to the Commission as a whole, not a traitorous leader.

Vance looked around the room, realizing in real-time that his empire was crumbling beneath his feet.

“You can't do this,” Vance stammered, backing away from the table. “I am a United States Senator! I protect this syndicate from Washington!”

“You protected your own pockets,” Dante said, standing up.

Dante walked slowly around the mahogany table until he stood directly in front of the trembling politician.

“The Moretti family keeps its foundation,” Dante stated, his voice ringing with unquestionable authority. “The Russo territory belongs to me by right of conquest and blood. And you, Robert... you are going to resign your Senate seat tomorrow morning due to sudden health complications.”

Vance opened his mouth to argue, but Dante cut him off.

“If you fight me,” Dante whispered, leaning in close, “I won't just release the tape. I will send Marco to your house. Do we understand each other?”

Vance swallowed hard, a drop of sweat rolling down his temple. The fight completely left his body. He was a broken man.

“Yes,” Vance choked out.

Dante turned back to the table, looking at the remaining three bosses.

“Does anyone else have an objection to my claim?”

The old Genovese boss slowly stood up. He bowed his head respectfully.

“The Commission recognizes your claim, Dante. The Russo territory is yours. The Foundation remains untouched.”

The other two bosses nodded their agreement.

The vote was unanimous.

Dante walked back to my side. He offered me his hand.

I placed my hand in his, and we walked out of the ballroom together. The heavy mahogany doors opened for us, the guards bowing their heads as we passed.

We didn't speak until we were back in the armored Maybach, driving through the rain-slicked streets of Chicago.

Dante hit the privacy divider, separating us from the driver.

He turned to me, pulling me into a fierce, desperate kiss.

“When did you find that recording?” Dante asked, resting his forehead against mine, his chest heaving with adrenaline.

“When Bianca dropped the watch in the penthouse,” I smiled softly. “I noticed a small port on the side. I plugged it into my laptop while you were securing Leo in the panic room. She wasn't just a traitor. She was an informant for the Russos. She recorded all her meetings for leverage.”

Dante laughed, a deep, joyous sound that I hadn't heard in years.

“You outsmarted the entire Commission with a piece of jewelry,” Dante said, shaking his head in awe.

“I told you,” I murmured, running my hand through his dark hair. “I'm your equal.”

Dante pulled me close, burying his face in my neck.

“You’re my queen,” he whispered fiercely.

We arrived back at the penthouse just as the sun began to rise over the city.

The cleaning crews had already arrived, silently and efficiently removing the debris and boarding up the shattered windows.

We walked straight to the panic room.

I punched in the code. The steel door slid open.

Leo was fast asleep on the cot, his stuffed bear tucked securely under his arm. Marco sat in a chair nearby, standing up immediately when we entered.

“Everything quiet, Boss?” Marco asked softly.

“Everything is perfect, Marco,” Dante smiled. “Go get some sleep.”

Marco nodded and slipped out of the room.

Dante and I stood over the cot, watching Leo sleep peacefully. The little boy who had spent his life hidden in the shadows was finally safe in the light.

I reached out and gently brushed a dark curl from Leo’s forehead.

“He’s going to need a lot of love to forget what Bianca put him through,” I whispered.

“He has you,” Dante said, wrapping his arm around my waist. “That’s all he needs.”

It was the happy ending we had fought so hard for. The traitors were gone. The empire was secure. Our family was finally whole.

But as Dante reached down to pull the blanket up over Leo’s shoulders, his hand brushed against the pocket of Leo’s blue coat.

A piece of heavy parchment paper slipped out and fluttered to the floor.

I bent down and picked it up.

It was a legal document.

I unfolded it, my brow furrowing in confusion.

It wasn't a custody agreement.

It was a Last Will and Testament.

And the name at the top didn't belong to Bianca.

May you like

It belonged to my father.
