Chapter 11 - The Necklace In The Wooden Box

The silver necklace slipped through my trembling fingers, pooling into the palm of my hand.
Vanessa.
I stared at the child's jewelry, the air in the closet suddenly too thin to breathe.
In 2004, the Greco family had nearly destroyed us. Antonio had retaliated. He told me he killed the Greco boss in a warehouse, alone.
But this newspaper clipping said the wife and two children were killed in the crossfire.
And the name on this child's necklace was Vanessa.
A horrifying, sickening theory began to form in my mind.
I pulled my phone back out and opened the encrypted contact list Antonio had set up for me. I dialed his former head of security, a man who had retired with us to New York.
"Hello, Mrs. Moretti," the gruff voice answered.
"Marcus," I said, trying to keep my voice steady. "I need you to run a background check. Deep cover. Off the books."
"On who?"
"Vanessa Bellini," I said. "I know Carlo hired her to distract Antonio. But I want to know everything about her childhood. specifically, I want to know who her parents were before she was adopted or placed in foster care."
"Give me ten minutes," Marcus said, hanging up.
I sat on the floor of the closet, clutching the silver necklace.
Ten minutes later, the phone buzzed.
"You're not going to like this, Margaret," Marcus said heavily. "Vanessa Bellini is an alias. Her real name is Vanessa Greco. She is the youngest daughter of Don Greco."
The room spun.
"The newspaper said the children died," I whispered.
"They didn't," Marcus explained. "Antonio's hit squad killed Greco and his wife in their home, not a warehouse. The two kids—Vanessa and her older brother—were hiding in a closet. Antonio found them."
Tears streamed down my face. "He killed them?"
"No," Marcus said quietly. "Antonio couldn't pull the trigger on kids. He broke the Commission's rule. He smuggled them out of Chicago, paid a fortune to set them up with new identities, and hid them in the foster system. He paid their living expenses for twenty years."
I dropped the phone.
Antonio hadn't just found a random twenty-four-year-old girl to use as a distraction.
He had brought the orphan of his greatest enemy into our home.
I walked out of the closet and down the stairs. Antonio was in the living room, pouring two glasses of wine, the fire crackling cheerfully in the hearth.
He looked up and smiled when he saw me. But his smile faded when he saw the silver necklace dangling from my fingers.
"Where did you find that?" he asked, his voice dropping to a whisper.
"In your closet," I said, walking toward him. "Why didn't you tell me, Antonio? Why did you lie about the Greco hit?"
Antonio set the wine glasses down and rubbed his face in his hands. He looked utterly exhausted.
"Because if the Commission found out I let Greco's heirs live, they would have executed me, Maggie," he confessed, refusing to meet my eyes. "I couldn't murder a six-year-old girl and her ten-year-old brother. I just couldn't do it."
"So you hid them," I breathed, realizing the immense, terrifying risk he had taken. "You paid for them to live."
"Yes," Antonio nodded. "I kept tabs on them from a distance. I made sure they went to school. I made sure they were safe."
"Then how did Vanessa end up working for Carlo?" I demanded.
Antonio looked up, his eyes filled with absolute heartbreak.
"She didn't know who I was," Antonio explained. "She didn't know I was the man who killed her parents. Carlo found out about them. He tracked them down. Carlo hired her to seduce me because he knew that if I ever discovered who she really was, my guilt would stop me from hurting her."
"But Carlo put her brother in a coma," I argued.
"Carlo needed leverage over her," Antonio said bitterly. "He orchestrated the crash to hurt Elena, yes. But when Vanessa's brother was injured in the wreck, Carlo used it to his advantage. He told Vanessa that I was the one who caused the crash, and that the only way to pay for her brother's care was to help Carlo destroy me."
The absolute cruelty of it took my breath away. Carlo had used the orphans Antonio had saved to destroy Antonio's life.
"And when you found out she was Vanessa Greco?" I asked softly.
"I figured it out the night of our anniversary," Antonio said, tears shining in his eyes. "When she walked into the restaurant wearing that diamond bracelet. It belonged to her mother. I recognized it."
That was why he had looked so terrified when I confronted him. He wasn't just hiding an affair. He was hiding the ghost of his greatest sin.
"I tried to protect her, Maggie," Antonio wept, the powerful boss finally breaking down. "I tried to save those kids twenty years ago, and it cost Vanessa her brother. My mercy destroyed her life."
I walked over to the man I had loved for thirty years. He had committed terrible crimes in his life, but his heart, the core of who he was, had always tried to protect the innocent.
I knelt on the floor in front of him and pulled his head against my chest.
"You didn't destroy her life, Antonio," I whispered, stroking his silver hair. "Carlo did. You gave her twenty years of life she wouldn't have had. You are a good man, buried under a terrible life."
