Chapter 10 - THE NEW CHAPTER

Three months passed.
The Chicago winter had melted into a bright, hopeful spring. The west wing of the Vitale estate was still under reconstruction, wrapped in scaffolding, but the rest of the house felt entirely different.
It was no longer a cold museum of marble and silence. It felt like a home.
I walked down the grand staircase, no longer wearing a black and white uniform, but a tailored navy blouse and slacks. I carried a clipboard, but not for chores. I was managing the Teresa Vitale Foundation, directing millions of dollars toward women’s shelters and orphanages.
“Claire! Look!”
Mia came barreling down the hallway, her dark curls bouncing. She held up a crayon drawing.
“It’s a picture of our family,” she beamed.
I knelt down to look. She had drawn Giovanni, towering and protective. She had drawn Elena, holding a flower. And right in the middle, holding Mia’s hand, was a woman with a kind smile.
“Is that me?” I asked, a lump forming in my throat.
“Yeah. You’re my Auntie Claire,” she said matter-of-factly, before running off toward the kitchen.
I stood up, wiping a stray tear, and bumped right into Giovanni.
He was wearing a casual gray sweater, looking healthier and more relaxed than I had ever seen him. The dark circles under his eyes were gone.
“She’s got a good eye for art,” he smiled, looking down at the hallway where Mia disappeared.
“She’s a joy, Giovanni.”
He looked at me, his expression turning serious. “There’s a board meeting for the Foundation this afternoon. I want you to chair it.”
I blinked in surprise. “Me? But you’re the head of the family.”
“You’re the head of the Foundation,” he corrected gently. “My mother trusted you. And so do I.”
He reached into his pocket and handed me a small velvet box.
I opened it hesitantly. Inside was a delicate gold bracelet, engraved with a single word: Family.
“I had it made for you,” he said softly. “To replace the things you lost in the fire.”
I was speechless. But before I could thank him, his phone buzzed.
Giovanni checked the caller ID, and the warmth instantly drained from his face. His jaw tightened.

“What is it?” I asked, stepping closer.
He looked up at me, his eyes dark. “They found Bianca.”
