Chapter 8 - THE HEIRLOOM

The next morning, the sun rose over a different world.
The news of Victor Ricci’s “sudden retirement” and Vanessa’s departure from Chicago had already hit the morning papers. The estate felt lighter, as if a dark cloud had finally lifted.
I was in the kitchen, making pancakes.
Leo was sitting at the counter, swinging his legs. He was wearing a brand-new set of pajamas Matteo had rushed out to buy at 6 AM. Bruno was asleep under his stool, occasionally opening an eye to check for dropped food.
“Emmy?” Leo asked, his mouth full of syrup.
“Yeah, buddy?”
“Am I going to have to hide again?”
I stopped flipping the pancakes. I walked over and kissed the top of his head.
“Never,” I promised. “This is your home. Forever.”
Footsteps sounded in the hallway. Matteo walked in. He was wearing a casual gray sweater and jeans, looking incredibly handsome and relaxed.
He poured himself a cup of coffee and leaned against the counter, smiling at us.
“Good morning,” he said.
“Good morning, Uncle Matteo,” Leo beamed.
Matteo’s smile widened. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.
He set it on the counter in front of me.
My breath caught. “Mr. Romano, what is that?”
“First of all, my name is Matteo,” he said softly. “Second, open it.”
I wiped my hands on my apron, my fingers trembling as I opened the lid.
Inside was a breathtaking vintage diamond ring.
“That was my mother’s,” Matteo said. “The real one. Vanessa sold the original to a pawn shop months ago and replaced it with a fake. Marcus tracked it down this morning.”
I stared at the sparkling stone. “It’s beautiful, Matteo. But I can’t accept this.”
“Why not?”
“Because… I’m a maid. You’re a CEO. People will talk.”
Matteo stepped closer, closing the distance between us. He gently took the box from my hands, removed the ring, and held my left hand.
“Let them talk,” he whispered. “You saved my nephew. You saved my dog. You saved my heart, Emily. I don’t care what the world thinks. I only care about you.”
He slid the ring onto my finger. It fit perfectly.
“Marry me,” he said.
Tears spilled down my cheeks. I looked at Leo, who was grinning ear to ear. I looked at Bruno, who thumped his tail.
Then I looked at the man who had turned out to be my everything.
May you like
“Yes,” I cried, throwing my arms around his neck.
Matteo lifted me off the floor, kissing me deeply. It was a kiss full of promise, healing, and a future neither of us expected to find.
